RhoDeo 1244 Beats

Hello, Time for some more 'Beats' courtesy of Luke Slater. Two classic mix double albums, not just bashing beats but building them up, defacto 4 excellent one hour mixes. I made a small mistake in the title paste and copying resulted in all missing the h in loathing, oddly when i created the zips the h was there, should have noticed it but concentrated too much on the numbering i guess. Anyway it's easy enough to correct that mistake. Enough of that.. N'joy !

Born in Reading (12 June 1968, England) and raised in Horley, Slater's early sound dalliances with his father's reel to reel tape recorder and his drumming stints led to work in local record shops, including Jelly Jam in Brighton. By 1988, Slater was immersed in the embryonic acid house scene, DJing in London's Heaven nightclub.

Luke is generally credited with helping to create a U.K. techno tradition with a strong Detroit foundation. Slater's work is probably the more straight-ahead (although he's released works ranging from tough, banging techno to lush, beatless ambient) and tends to build on the Steel City's ruddy, muscular frame rather than simply repeating it. He has recorded under names such as Morganistic, Clementine, Planetary Assault Systems, and Luke Slater's 7th Plane, and quite often in collaboration with Alan Sage. His first volume of the mix series Fear and Loathing appeared in 2001 on the React label, the second volume of Fear and Loathing appeared in late 2004.

Though Slater's production work references everything from retro-electro to funky breaks, Luke Slater's still a purist on the decks, and his double-disc mix treatment for React keeps it deliciously simple. Slater introduces the set with the raggedy sax solos and furious bongos of a self-titled single from Birdland, then quickly moves into more bangin' territory, courtesy of tracks from Ben Sims, Jeff Mills, DJ Shufflemaster, James Ruskin, and no less than three from his own Planetary Assault Systems alias. Slater stretches out on the second disc, beginning with a minimal DHS jacker from 1989 (!), stringing together left-field tracks from Two Lone Swordsmen and DBX. Minimal techno favorites like Mills, Pacou, and Mr. G make appearances midway through the set, then Slater turns to tech-house with breakbeat tracks from B.L.I.M. ("Eskimo"), Tipper ("Tug of War"), Si Begg's S.I. Futures project ("I Like That (Brand New)"), and, to top it off, an FC Kahuna mix of Felix da Housecat's 2001 burner, "Silver Screen - Shower Scene."  Luke Slater proves his touch is good as gold.

The first Fear and Loathing was an epic techno barrage that to many ears sounded the death knell for the '90s fixation with the harder, faster, louder pace of minimal and looping dance music. The second installment gets to the hard techno as well...eventually. But before it does, disc one offers a dubby, glitchy, at times purely ambient affair. It’s scrupulously planned, programmed to feel more like a musical journey than a collection of unrelated tracks.

The voyage starts with Planetary Assault Systems and the seemingly timeless chord that underpins ‘Long Lost’. In fact, Slater waits until the fourth track before introducing anything approaching a kick drum, stringing the tension out and building the expectation. Gradually the basslines assert themselves, and the momentum builds with tracks from Holden, High Tide and Porter Ricks, leading to the majestic ‘Matala Bobo’ from Brotham States. The coolness of Agoria’s ‘Caraibes’ holds little clue to the approaching bassline of Throbbing Gristle’s ‘Hot On The Heels Of Love’, steered via the mixing desk of Carl Craig. After this climax the mix gradually subsides but the quality remains, with Lump 200 contributing a couple opf highly distinctive tracks.
Strap yourself in for CD2 though, as it’s a lot faster, dirtier, and funkier. Chris McCormack’s ‘Saturation Point’ is a superb early track, opening up into a widescreen chord progression, and classics old and new rub shoulders as Renegade Soundwave’s ‘Biting My Nails’ leads to Alter Ego’s ‘Rocker’. The whole thing kicks off massively with Martin H’s ‘Anja’, and pumps iron with the drum workouts of Paul Mac and Daniel Jacques. DJ Misjah adds a jacking groove with ‘Life Is Music’, and the funk well and truly hits the fan for Joris Voorn’s ‘Incident’, taken over by a huge piano riff. Any aspiring DJ could learn that the key to all this seems to lie in the planning – the fact it’s extremely well mixed too is the icing on the cake.

Many thanks for this & everything; love the mix of goodies that you post. Big fan of "Spaced" - I'm amazed that more folks in the States don't know about this show.... Planning to give Byron a try as when the opportunity presents itself; never heard of it before.

One thing - Fear & Loathing 2 disc 1 (flac) seems to be missing track 4. Looking forward to checking this out in its entirety.
