Hello, today the 164th post of GoldyRhox, classic pop rock, as the Worldcup starts today i thought it fitting to show in the darklight today a satirical Brazilian rock band. The musical style of our mystery band employed a humorous mixture between rock and a wide range of styles. They often borrowed elements from other music, among which were the main riff of the Portuguese Vira ("Vira-Vira"), Northeastern Brazilian rhythms like forró ("Jumento Celestino"), Mexican music ("Pelados em Santos"), heavy metal ("Débil Metal"), sertanejo ("Bois Don't Cry"), and even pagode ("Lá Vem o Alemão"). This combination can be easily checked at their videos, where various references to many cultures were found.
Bento Hinoto, Júlio Rasec, as well as brothers Samuel and Sérgio Reoli started out from the city of Guarulhos, State of São Paulo. It was 1989 the bands name Utopia, they were performing covers of Legião Urbana and Rush. Soon Alecsander Alves Leite = Dinho was incorporated, and Utopia performed in the suburbs of São Paulo. They even did release an album, but it sold less than 100 copies. Just as the band noticed the comedical intromissions and songs on their concerts were better accepted than the serious performances, the band decided to fully embrace the comedy on their music, including a change to a double entendre name as, in Portuguese mamonas can be either the name of the Castor oil plant, which contains the highly toxic comount ricin (their logo incorporated a castor bean) or the augmentative for mamas, meaning breasts (which were prominently pictured on the album cover). The band mentioned model Mari Alexandre as an influence to the name, and even translated the name into English as "Killer Big Breasts" but Ricin killers is defacto the closest 'translation' of their name, though that wouldn't really convey the nature of their music.
They were a huge hit in 1995 among young folk and adults - probably due to the crude humor in their lyrics. Their career ended tragically March 2nd 1996, after a show in Brasília, the band was flying to São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport, in Guarulhos. The aircraft was a Learjet 25. The jet was on final approach to land on the runway 09R, but went-around. As it flew around the runway for a second attempt to land, it crashed into the Cantareira mountain range, at 23:16. Not the best pilot then, anyway at the height of their success when money was finally flowing all members of the band were instantly killed as was the plane crew.
After the band's sudden end, their label released one live album and one posthumous album. They continued to be very famous in Brazil, and kept being influential to the culture.

Most of the albums i 'll post made many millions for the music industry and a lot of what i intend to post still gets repackaged and remastered decades later, squeezing the last drop of profit out of bands that for the most part have ceased to exist long ago, although sometimes they get lured out of the mothballs to do a big bucks gig or tour. Today's mystery album is the eponymous debut album by our mystery band released June 23 1995. It was to be their only studio album in only eight months (until the end of the band), it sold more than 2 million copies, afterwards another million were sold making it one of the highest grossing local rock-pop bands ever in Brazil, a certified goldy rhox (diamond in fact).
As it's unlikely any of you have ever heard of this album here's an extended track guide as it where.
01-1406 Satirises "as seen on TV" sales strategies. The title is a reference to the phone number of one of such services, well known in Brazil at the time. The song also includes several English words such as money, good, work, have, and play. The latter 3 being conjugated in Portuguese as verbs, like "Workando" meaning "working". 02-Vira-Vira A Vira-styled song (inspired by the songs of Portuguese singer Roberto Leal), pokes fun at the meaning of the word suruba (meaning "orgy"), which is mistaken for something else by a Portuguese couple. 03-Pelados em Santos Satyrises shallow commercial music, custom cars and the way Latinos are viewed by Americans. 04-Chopis Centis Parody of the main riff of The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go" (with scatological sounds replacing Mick Jones' guitar fills) and pokes fun at the difficulties faced by Nort-Easterners in São Paulo due to cultural differences. Part of the fun of the song derives from its criticism of shopping centers. 05-Jumento Celestino A forró parody, tells the story of a man from Bahia coming to "Sum Paulo" in his donkey - which he compares to a car, including installing a stereo. 06-Sabão Crá-Crá A nursery rhyme about toilet soap and men's intimate parts. It is a public domain song. 07-Uma Arlinda Mulher A lovesong in reverse, describing an ugly woman instead of a pretty one. Imitates MPB singer Belchior, whose deep voice and serious tone add fun to the clueless lyrics. The title is a take on the Brazilian translation of "Pretty Woman". 08-Cabeça de Bagre II Pokes fun at punks, mostly by saying that they are utterly unintelligent blokes who can't finish their schooling. The title is a possible pun on Titãs' Cabeça Dinossauro. 09-Mundo Animal A series of heavy/dirty jokes about disgusting sexual or scatological facts of animal behavior. Talks about the size of elephant's genitalia or the absence of morals on dogs, as well as implying Camels "carry their balls on their backs." 10-Robocop Gay Spoofs the film character RoboCop and transgender males. RoboCop's implants and cybernetics are compared to the transgender's surgeries and implants. Also pokes fun at religions, including a paradoxical chorus saying that homosexuals are everywhere (even among Muslims and Neo-Nazis) and that they should not be mistreated.
11-Bois Don't Cry The title parodies The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" but the lyrics and the music follow the bolero style. Makes fun of a flamboyant macho man who suffers impotent as the woman he loves cheats him. Features a short synthesizer sequence off Rush's "Tom Sawyer" and "The Mirror" from Dream Theater. 12-Débil Metal Sung in mock English, in a Max Cavalera-like tone to accompany the heavy metal style of the song, which was closely associated to Sepultura at the time, is a spoof of heavy metal music. The lyrics apparently convey the message that heavy metal fans cannot understand what their idols sing. 13-Sábado de SolThe surrealistic tale of a meal among friends which ends up disrupted by hungry marijuana smokers. It's a cover of the band "Baba Cósmica" 14-Lá vem o Alemão Satyrised pop-samba music (pagode), about a poor man whose girl left him for an alemão ("German", a slang term for white, wealthy people). The title also parodies the song "Lá Vem o Negão" (Here Comes the Black Guy) from samba group Cravo e Canella, which was a hit just two years before the album's release. The song also features well-known pagode musicians doing additional instrumental work: Fabinho from Negritude Júnior and Leandro Lehart from Art Popular. It comes with a lyrics booklet get it here...
