RhoDeo 1820 Roots

Hello, we've arrived in Columbia that country that gave all those whitey ego's something to die for, Coca Cola build a billion dollar industry on and those poor South Americans got something to chew on and keep them working. But then it's not all misery there, there's lot's of great music as well.

The cumbia "crystallized", through music, the dream of Símón Bolívar: a united Latin America. From the 1940s onwards, modern cumbia spread and became popular throughout Latin America, with which it followed different commercial adaptations, such as the Argentine cumbia, the Bolivian cumbia, the Chilean cumbia, the Dominican cumbia, the Ecuadorian cumbia, the cumbia mexicana, cumbia peruana, cumbia salvadoreña, cumbia uruguaya and cumbia venezuelan, among others. Cumbia is a musical genre from Colombia, which has its origins in Africa. This genre is a mixture of the influence of slaves from Africa, Native Americans and to a lesser extent the Spanish. Being a product of the miscegenation between these cultures during the Conquest and the Colony. The cumbia gets its name from the word "Cumbé", which is a dance of the people of color of the Spanish Guinea, in West Africa. .... N'Joy

Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among the African population on the Caribbean coasts of Colombia. It is a mixture of Spanish, Native Colombian and African music. The style of dance is designed to recall the shackles worn around the ankles of the slaves. In the 19th century, slavery was abolished and Africans, Indians and other ethnic groups got a more complete integration in the Colombian culture.

Cumbia is a complex, rhythmic music which arose on Colombia's Atlantic coast. In its original form, cumbia bands included only percussion and vocals; modern groups include saxophones, trumpets, keyboards and trombones as well. It evolved out of native influences, combining both traditions. Some observers have claimed that the dance originally associated with iron chains around the ankle. Others still believe that it is a direct import from Guinea, which has a popular dance form called cumbe.

Cumbia's form was solidified in the 1940s when it spread from the rural countryside to urban and middle-class audiences. Mambo, big band and porro brass band influences were combined by artists like Lucho Bermúdez to form a refined form of cumbia that soon entered the Golden Age of Cumbia during the 1950s. Discos Fuentes, the largest and most influential record label in the country, was founded during this time. Fruko, known as the Godfather of Salsa, introduced Cuban salsa to Colombia and helped bring Discos Fuentes to national prominence by finding artists like La Sonora Dinamita, who brought cumbia to Mexico, where it remains popular.

It is worth pointing out that the "classic" cumbia known throughout Colombia is the Cumbia Cienaguera. This song reflects a uniquely Colombian feel known as "sabor" (flavour) and "ambiente" (atmosphere). Arguably, this song has remained a Colombian staple through the years and is widely known as Colombia's unofficial national anthem.

Miles Cleret's Soundway Records has done more than any other label in the 21st century to uncover the many musical mysteries of Colombia. In 2008, the label issued its first compilation, Colombia! The Golden Age of Discos Fuentes: The Powerhouse of Colombian Music. In the years that followed they released a compilation of the Afro-influenced champeta Palenque Palenque; Aqui los Bravos!, a best-of collection dedicated to the work of Michi Sarmiento and y Su Bravos; and another, detailing more of the history of Discos Fuentes and especially the legacy of the Fuentes family's youngest son, called Cartagena! Curro Fuentes & the Big Band Cumbia and Descarga Sound of Colombia 1962-1972. This double-disc, 55-track monster was compiled by Will "Quantic" Holland and Cleret (Quantic actually moved to Colombia, learned to play accordion, and started the band Quantic y Su Combo Bárbaro in order to more fully understand the the multifaceted cumbia, birthed in the Magdalena River in the southeastern part of the Andes. The journey begins there, and moves north through cities along the river to the more urban areas surrounding the place it empties: the Caribbean Sea. These tracks cover 31 years in the era when the vinyl record dominated the music industry. The tracks come from 78s and 45s, and include rare LP tracks by some of the music's legends such as Anibal Velasquez, Tono Fernandez, Albert Pacheco, Gilardo Montoya, and Grupo Costa Brava, but also feature many recordings by obscure and even unknown artists. The evolution of cumbia is fascinating and compelling as it moves from its percussion, accordion, and chanted call-and-response vocal origins to include horns, beautifully harmonized vocals, and electric bass as it moves north. Stylistically, given its movement up a body of water, the music's history eventually reveals the inclusion of descarga, guaguanco, and even montuno in its travels, becoming first a Latin and then a true world music. The Original Sound of Cumbia isn't merely a historic series of recordings, but reveals that cumbia, from its poor, rural, and indigenous roots, has become -- long after these recordings faded from view -- a vital part of Colombian, Latin, and European culture at large. The music found in this collection sounds as radical and vital in the 21st century as it did during the period documented here.

This album contains a song from the general discography of Aníbal and Cheíto Velásquez: "La negra Celina", which was recorded for the first time in 1963 and subsequently reissued in 26 albums of that discography. The cumbia received, without a doubt, a great impulse from Mexico, being the obligatory springboard for all those who wished to be successful in different musical genres. In Mexico is where the cumbia type ballad was created without ceasing to be danceable. Many groups came out ahead of the best exponents of the Colombian cumbia but with the use of more modern instruments than those traditionally used for cumbia. In some regions of Colombia and Mexico the accordion is used as the basic instrument of the cumbia. Without further ado, these are the 40 cumbias that should never be missing in any pachanga, since they were resounding successes in their time and danced by crowds in several countries of the world, if you are looking for a great set of cumbias, look no further. Move your skeleton and be ready to dance!

RhoDeo 1820 Space F 6

Hello,

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Space Force is a BBC Radio science fiction serial, broadcast from 4 April 1984 to 17 June 1985. Written by Charles Chilton, it was originally intended to be a sequel to his Journey into Space series (broadcast in the 1950s), using the cast who'd just made a one-off revival of that series ("The Return From Mars"); while this idea was dropped late in the development of the serial, the four characters are nevertheless essentially the same as those from the earlier series, albeit with different names.

The first series begins during the northern summer of 2010. Both series seem to initially mirror the first two Journey Into Space stories before branching off into quite different plots. A second series, known as Space Force 2, featured the same main characters, once again played by Barry Foster, Nigel Stock, Nicky Henson, and Tony Osoba. Within both series, Space Force is the name of the team's spaceship, rather than the name of an organisation.. ......'N Joy

Barry Foster - Captain Saxon Berry, captain of the Space Force and leader of the team. Also captained the Lunar 9 freighter for the first episode of the first series before being transferred to the Space Force.

Tony Osoba - Lodderick Sincere, The flight engineer for Space Force, a keen astronomer who sometimes is hot-headed enough to get himself and the team into trouble.

Nicky Henson - Lemuel "Chipper" Barnet , the radio operator for Space Force. The joker of the group who also struggles with the terrifying situations the team face. In a direct link to Journey into Space, Chipper refers once to his grandfather, Lemmy Barnett.

Nigel Stock - Professor Magnus Carter, added to the Lunar 9 crew under somewhat mysterious circumstances, Magnus is part of a secret organisation searching for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Sundaze 1820

Hello, lot's a big things going on on the 19th of May, there was the Zokolan, a monsterclimb in the Giro, which saw the rebirth of Chris Froome, he was ecstatic, behind him the current leader, a guy that can feed of two bodies being an identical twin and Dumoulin last years winner is still very much in the running, spectular week coming up there. Then there were 3 cupfinals, in Scotland Celtic was expected to win and they did, but England and Germany saw a surprise Man United were the favorite but once again Mourinho's attack proved impotent, Conte and Chelsea said thank you we'll have that FA Cup, in Germany Bayern were supposed to over run Frankfurt, but there their new Bayern coach had devised a well organised counter attack and Bayern without Robben just didnt find enough room to score more.
But all this were just side events for the big mediaworld, there was an elite wedding that needed the full attention of the public. The people in question are as it happens very nice, although the bride had been so not my type in the TV series Suits, in real life she seemed much nicer even though clearly dominant over her future husband, but then he stems from a family with dominant female presence. Anyway the happy couple are expected to make babies and spread love and equality over the globe specially in the former colonies, and 'en passant' make brexit an success. I wish them good luck, the'll need it.

Today's artist, for the fourth and final time, is an Italian guitarist, producer, arranger, sound designer, and experimentalist, and plays in many bands. His musical career commenced during the late '70s, when he played guitar for various independent punk bands. By the mid-'80s, he'd co-founded the ongoing conceptual audio art project Sigillum S (with Paolo Bandera and Luca Digiorgio) that evolved into an internationally celebrated cult act  ....N'joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

After attending the exclusive High School Scuola Europa and the State University of Milan at the Faculty of Law for three years, he starting to work for a company of electronic engineers who design advanced systems and installations of maximum safety for the Italian government. Eraldo Bernocchi started his career in the late 1970s as a guitarist in independent punk bands. In the mid 1980s, together with Paolo Bandera and Luca di Giorgio, Eraldo co-founded the conceptual audio project Sigillum-S, which grew into a highly acclaimed international cult act and remains the longest running project Bernocchi is involved with.

In the 90s, he and his wife, visual artist Petulia Mattioli, established Verba Corrige Productions, which became the base for a raft of notable audio visual projects and co-operations. During the 1990s and 2000s, he expanded his base of collaborators greatly, both within Italy and throughout the world. Some of these included Mick Harris (Harris releasing Bernocchi's SIMM debut on his own Possible Recs imprint and working with Black Engine as well as two collaborative albums under their names), Almamegretta, Balázs Pándi, Bill Laswell, Colin Edwin, DJ Disk, DJ Olive, Gaudi, Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Harold Budd, Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, Markus Stockhausen, Nils Petter Molvaer, Professor Shebab, Raiz, Robin Guthrie, Russell Mills, Sensational, Spectre, Thomas Fehlmann, Toshinori Kondo, and Zu (as Black Engine).

In addition to regular work scoring music for adverts and other multimedia projects, he has composed film music for Academy Award winner Gabriele Salvatores and produced numerous art installations with Petulia Mattioli, as well as other artists, including Russell Mills and Harold Budd. He is known for being invited to play and organize several special events for the Dalai Lama in Italy.

In 2008, Bernocchi and music Giacomo Bruzzo founded RareNoiseRecords, a label based in London which aims to showcase a wide range of cutting edge music. The label has since become an important conduit championing several forward thinking and original artists, as well as releasing a number of Eraldo’s own recordings, including ambient guitar duo Parched (with Davide Tiso from Ephel Duath fame), Somma with Nils Petter Molvaer, Bill Laswell, Raiz and Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari), Owls (again with Fornasari and Tony Wakeford), Metallic Taste of Blood (with Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree, Balázs Pándi and Jamie Saft) and Obake, a doomtronic quartet with Jason Konhen/Bong Ra on bass, Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari and Balázs Pándi.

Notable projects

The project Sigillum S was created on 23 December 1985. It has had, since the beginning, the aim to be totally against the logic of the "band". It was conceived as an open structure in which people could work and research different subjects. Formed by Eraldo Bernocchi (guitars, electronic treatments, voice, and programmation) Paolo Bandera (electronic treatments, bass, and voice) and Luca Di Giorgio (keyboards), the project has always been a double faced creature, mixing together on the same level precise ritual and ethnic aspects with a noisy music.

Since the beginning, Sigillum S had as path to be followed the knowledge and the total war against any kind of limit or taboo, refusing any kind of relationship with political/religious structures. During the first 10 years they toured quite extensively through all Europe and Canada, taking on stage a multimedia attack based on videos, slides and artworks used as a part of the stage. Having pared down along the way to consist of only Eraldo and Paolo as core members, they collaborated with different groups in different situations, like: Ain Soph, The Sodality, Gerstein, Iugula-Thor, Dive, Outoff Body Experience, Team Spam, the sculptor Milo Sacchi, the multimedia/artist PM.Koma and many others.

After a slew of releases through their first 15 years, they released the album Abstraction on Daft Records. This proved to be their last release for a number of years. In 2007, Verba Corrige announced the completion of 23|20, a celebration of the history of Sigillum S. The release was done in two different formats (Digipak CD and gatefold vinyl) featuring different track lists and sequences for each. The release featured all new material and collaborations with artists such as Toshinori Kondo, Bill Laswell, SH Fernando/WordSound, Prof. Shehab/Baboon Records, Martino Nicoletti, Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, the band Zu, Xabier Iriondo, Ephel Duath, various members of Crisis, Mark Solotroff, Thomas Fehlmann, Gudrun Gut, Andrea Marutti, Claudio Agostoni, and many others.

Since the release of 23|20 Sigillum S has continued to perform live, welcoming Luca Di Giorgio back into the fold and adding Petulia Mattioli as a fourth member. Much of their back catalog is now available through Bandcamp with new recordings and archival material forthcoming, both in physical and digital mediums.
Ashes

Ashes was started in 1990 essentially as an Eraldo solo project. The basic idea was to produce works that would be out of context for Sigillum S, as Ashes was a very personal project based on a strong individual introspection. The first release was recorded between 1990 and 1992, finally being released on the newly founded Verba Corrige label. This release, entitled Ashland was based on the guitar treatments, which are often used as a mantra for newly born mind paths. 1996 saw Ashes grow beyond the context of a solo project to include the bass and production of Bill Laswell and vocals of Raiz from Italian group Almamegretta. After a silence of almost 10 years, the project returned with a new album called Unisono, expanding on the core trio to include contributions from Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, Antonio Denti and Paolo Mongardi.

SIMM is a beat and bass oriented project owing a debt to the sound of Mick Harris' Scorn project, whom Eraldo had played a batch of live shows with. The project released one full-length release on Mick Harris' short-lived Possible Recs label as well as a 12" on the same label. Additionally, the moniker provided some tracks for a few compilations from around the same time period. In 2012 it was announced that the long-awaited follow up to Welcome was announced for release by Vital Records. After some production delays and personal issues within the label, the release (Visitor) has now shifted to the OHM Resistance label and has been released October 31, 2013.

The Somma project was conceived by Petulia Mattioli and Eraldo Bernocchi. The concept behind Somma is the real interaction among different cultures with the aim to contaminate and explore ancient traditions connecting new electronic music and technology with jazz, dub, and mantric concepts. Unlike several so called "world music" issues and experiments, Somma (Sacred Order of Magic Music and Art ) aims to have real interaction between different worlds, both sonically and visually. This approach rejects the traditional meaning of the moniker "world music" and avoids ethnic cliches, proposing that each event held be different, where participants will be building a sonic and visual ritual using both ancient and modern tools. Ranging from acoustic to electric to electronic, Somma aims for the creation of new rituals for a contemporary age, the interaction of the sacred and dub, a digital mantra for a new sacred ground.

Entirely improvised, every event/concert of Somma ties together two theoretically distant worlds using interaction between eastern and western musicians who look for a different concert/event for each performance. Tibetan culture is not at all used as a folkloristic or curious event, as too many times happens in the west, but as living part of the creative process. Visuals are also totally improvised and constructed in real time according to what is happening musically on stage to close the circle erasing any difference between past and future.

Since 1996 Bernocchi and Mattioli involved well known New York producer/bass legend Bill Laswell and start to work on the first studio recording of the combo together with 7 Tibetan monks. The album, Hooked Light Rays came out for Low Records, a division of Pete Namlook's Fax label, gaining positive reviews. In 1998 the album was reprinted by Felmay/New Tone an Italian label specialized in traditional/modern musics.

With the encouragement of Musica 90, one of the most renowned booking/production agencies in Europe, Somma's first public appearance took place on November 26, 1996 at Teatro Regio in Torino Italy in front of 1600 people. (Eraldo Bernocchi - treated guitars and electronics, Bill Laswell - bass, Petulia Mattioli - stage design and visuals, Oz Fritz - sound engineering and space dislocations, 7 Tibetan monks - vocals, horns, bells, drums) In 2001, on occasion of the official visit of the Dalai lama, Somma performed in Trento at the Centro Santa Chiara theatre, in front of a gathering 2000 people. Somma continues to grow and expand, most recently playing on May 28, 2007 at Teatro Dal Verme in Milan adding Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, Nils Petter Molvaer and the vocal group Faraualla to the mix. This show received release in 2010 through Eraldo's RareNoise label.

In 2007/2008, it was announced that Eraldo and partner Giacomo Bruzzo created a new record label to be based out of the UK, called RareNoiseRecords. The label officially began releasing albums at the end of the first half of 2009. The initial slate of releases kicked off with the debut release of Meditronica – a project by Ashtech and Polcari which also featured the talents of Raiz, Eraldo Bernocchi and Dub Gabriel. Other releases through the end of 2009 include The Mantra ATSMM, a Method of Defiance live album and DVD from 2007 featuring the then line-up of Bill Laswell, Bernie Worrell, Dr. Israel, Toshinori Kondo and Guy Licata, the long-awaited Buckethead side project Death Cube K's Torn From Black Space and Parched, an atmospheric guitar project from Eraldo and Davide Tiso.

As 2010 opened, a live recording of a 2007 show from Somma (held back from 2009 due to perfecting artwork issues) was released and the label released albums and/or EPs by Italian groups Echo and The Mantra ATSMM. Obake is one of Bernocchi's newer ongoing projects, meant to be the place where the energies of Doom and Drone Metal fuse with ambient electronica, noise, the exactness of math-rock, the groove of blues undercurrents harking back to the dawn of hard-rock and the fluid lyrical delivery and musings of a commanding operatic voice. The initial release on RareNoise consisted of Eraldo Bernocchi and Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, Massimo Pupillo of the group Zu on bass and drummer Balazs Pandi. After some internal shifting (including a short tour with Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3) filling in on bass, new member Jason Köhnen of Bong-Ra fame was announced in 2013 as the permanent bassist with new recordings commencing that year. In 2014 “Mutations” , the second Obake album, came out harvesting incredible reviews and appearances in major festivals. As well Osso, his new band with Morkobot.

Over the last 2 years the label has expanded its artist and release base, with critically acclaimed releases from Eraldo related groups such as electronica/neo-folk project OWLS (with Tony Wakeford and Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari), Metallic Taste of Blood (Jamie Saft, Colin Edwin and Balazs Pandi) and Obake as well as Eraldo's collaboration with Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie. Aside from Eraldo projects, the label has also released albums by Brainkiller, Bob Belden's Animation, David Fiuczynski, Slobber Pup, InterStatic, Lorenzo Feliciati, Martin Schulte, Mole (Productions) and Naked Truth.

Simm is to chill-out what Tool are to hardcore metal -- that is a more oppressive, self-hating variation that works towards progressive art rock. Simm's music is closest to Tricky's Nearly God trip-hop in practice, with stark intellectual environments, intensely controlled samples -- perhaps one or two elements per song -- and a soiled production

It has been 8 years since Eraldo Bernocchi last released an album under the Simm moniker, and his return to producing sleek, dark, horror inspired Down-tempo/Dubstep/slow BPM music is nothing short of fantastic. The Visitor is a powerful, masterfully crafted soundtrack of vengeance and reprisal - emerging from darkness to strike unseen, a force unrecognizable to it's enemies. For those who enjoy Scorn and Balkansky, Simm is the more suave and sophisticated take on the low tempo, bass heavy paradigm. Bernocchi's constructed horror atmospheres and deformed samples alongside his trademark treated guitars align mesmerizingly over futuristic Down-tempo beats and silk smooth bass.

The guitars grind and burn, writhe and churn on the downtuned ‘Seven Rotten Globes’ that heralds the arrival of Obake’s second long player. The influences of Melvins and Sabbath are in evidence as they blast out primal fury hewn from the murky dawn of metal. They slow things to a crawl, the riffs strung out and left to simmer atmospherically. The dark and horrorific viaticum, which can be perceived from the very beginning, is broadly defined as completion in Transfiguration, whose aberrant intro, offers the preamble to a rhythmic and enveloping sound structure.  An absence of air that brings the redundant stoner sound to cross the horizons of the genre, thanks to inlays expressive and decadent sound.  A perfect track, not only thanks to the evocative versatility of Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, but also thanks to the sound divergences, which overlay a perfect drum set in its being. The catacomb and rarefied outro redefines the expressive echoes, dragging the listener towards a filmic nightmare, from which it is difficult to come out.‘Thanatos’ brings a smoky shroud of darkness before ‘Second Death of Foreg’ descends deeper into the smouldering abyss, evoking esoteric mysticism and mythology. It’s a mighty album of epic proportions and appropriate weight. Heavy, and then some....

Over the last 60 years, East Meets West recordings have become somewhat commonplace in creative music. With Invisible Strings, guitarists Eraldo Bernocchi and Prakash Sontakke add a remarkable entry to a long list. Bernocchi is virtually unclassifiable as a musician, composer, and producer. .

Bernocchi's lap steel guitar playing is the prime melodic force on these nine pieces and reflects the influences of Carnatic music, Bollywood, spaghetti western soundtracks, and the melodic improvisation tradition. Bernocchi plays baritone and electric guitars and electronics. He places his abundant abilities in service to Sontakke's labyrinthine harmonic creations. Ambient music informs each of these tracks, but the emphasis of percussion and haunted lyricism adds quiet drama that creates depth and heft, not merely ethereality. Pronounced plodding beats, strummed chords, and interplay between baritone and steel guitars are hallmarks in the foreboding "The Last Emperor Walked Alone." "From Star to Star," with its wordless choral vocal samples in the intro and syncopated layers of dubby rhythmic pulses, frames an active conversation between the guitarists in subtle, sweet yet poignant melodies that possess a song-like architecture. "Bangalor Electric" offers pronounced electronic snare beats and breaks atop hypnotic electric fingerpicked guitar vamps as Sontakke punctuates and paints them. The use of digital delay, drum and bass beats, and baritone guitar basslines on "Purple Yello" offers an elegant freneticism for the lap steel; Sontakke decorates sparsely but effectively. Taken as a whole, it offers the sound of motion looking past itself. Its sonic landscape circles wider with each pass until it swallows everything in its path to become a solitary, nearly exultant voice. The imagination at work on Invisible Strings is revelatory. These two men use only what its necessary to communicate and create musical "stories" that resonate far beyond each track's prescribed length. Each selection maintains a distinct identity that contributes to the seamless flow of the whole. The music balances cinematic qualities while remaining subjectively intimate. This 21st century addition in the East Meets West canon acts not only as a shining example of what is possible when two open-minded talents from different cultures enter into creative dialogue, but as a complete realization of said encounter's potential.

"In Praise Of Shadows" is a massive collaboration album by Italy's legendary producer Eraldo Bernocchi and Japanese dark ambient mastermind Manabu Hiramoto of Shinkiro. The music weaves dark electronics and industrial dub with heavy atmosphere. The 8 tracks based on a concept of the traditional Japanese aesthetics inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki's essay, beautifully contrasted light and shadow, stillness and motion with using modern technology and various musical compositions.

RhoDeo 1819 Grooves

Hello,

Today an American singer-songwriter and musician who performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. He recorded several major hits, including "Lean on Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day", and "Grandma's Hands". Withers won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for four more. His life was the subject of the 2009 documentary film Still Bill. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. ..... Withers, the youngest of six children, was born in the small coal-mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. He was born with a stutter and has said he had a hard time fitting in. Raised in nearby Beckley, he was 13 years old when his father died. Withers enlisted with the United States Navy at the age of 18 and served for nine years, during which time he overcame his stutter and became interested in singing and writing songs. He left the Navy in 1965. Using the $250 he received from selling his furniture to IBM co-worker Ron Sierra, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1967 to start a musical career. Withers worked as an assembler for several different companies, including Douglas Aircraft Corporation, while recording demo tapes with his own money, shopping them around and performing in clubs at night. When he debuted with the song "Ain't No Sunshine", he refused to resign from his job because he believed the music business was a fickle industry.

During early 1970, Withers' demonstration tape was auditioned favorably by Clarence Avant, owner of Sussex Records. Avant signed Withers to a record deal and assigned former Stax Records stalwart Booker T. Jones to produce Withers' first album. Four three-hour recording sessions were planned for the album, but funding caused the album to be recorded in three sessions with a six-month break between the second and final sessions. Just as I Am was released in 1971 with the tracks, "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Grandma's Hands" as singles. The album features Stephen Stills playing lead guitar. On the cover of the album, Withers is pictured at his job at Weber Aircraft in Burbank, California, holding his lunch box.

The album was a success, and Withers began touring with a band assembled from members of The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band: drummer James Gadson, guitarist Benorce Blackmon, keyboardist Ray Jackson, and bassist Melvin Dunlap. At the 14th annual Grammy Awards, on Tuesday, March 14, 1972, Withers won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for "Ain't No Sunshine." The track had already sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA in September 1971.

During a hiatus from touring, Withers recorded his second album, Still Bill. The single, "Lean on Me" went to number one the week of July 8, 1972. It was Withers' second gold single with confirmed sales in excess of three million. His follow-up, "Use Me" released in August 1972, became his third million seller, with the R.I.A.A. gold disc award taking place on October 12, 1972. His performance at Carnegie Hall on October 6, 1972, was recorded, and released as the live album Bill Withers, Live at Carnegie Hall on November 30, 1972. In 1974, Withers recorded the album +'Justments. Due to a legal dispute with the Sussex company, Withers was unable to record for some time thereafter. During this time, he wrote and produced two songs on the Gladys Knight & the Pips record I Feel a Song, and in October 1974 performed in concert together with James Brown, Etta James, and B.B. King in Zaire four weeks prior to the historic Rumble in the Jungle fight between Foreman and Ali. Footage of his performance was included in the 1996 documentary film When We Were Kings, and he is heard on the accompanying soundtrack. Other footage of his performance is included in the 2008 documentary film Soul Power, which is based on archival footage of the 1974 Zaire concert.

After Sussex Records folded, Withers signed with Columbia Records in 1975. His first album release with the label, Making Music, Making Friends, included the single "She's Lonely", which was featured in the film Looking for Mr. Goodbar. During the next three years he released an album each year with Naked & Warm (1976), Menagerie (1977, containing the successful "Lovely Day"), "Bout Love" (1978) and "Get on Down"; the latter song also included on the Looking for Mr. Goodbar soundtrack. Due to problems with Columbia and being unable to get songs approved for his album, he concentrated on joint projects from 1977 to 1985, including "Just the Two of Us", with jazz saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., which was released during June 1980 It won a Grammy on February 24, 1982. Withers next did "Soul Shadows" with the Crusaders, and "In the Name of Love" with Ralph MacDonald, the latter being nominated for a Grammy for vocal performance.

In 1982, Withers was a featured vocalist on the album, "Dreams in Stone" by French singer Michel Berger. This record included one composition co-written and sung by Withers, an upbeat disco song about New York City entitled "Apple Pie." The album was not released in North America, although it contains several songs about America. In 1985 came Watching You Watching Me, which featured the Top 40-rated R&B single "Oh Yeah", and ended Withers' business association with Columbia Records. Withers stated in interviews that a lot of the songs approved for the album, in particular, two of the first three singles released, were the same songs which were rejected in 1982, hence contributing significantly to the eight-year hiatus between albums. Withers also stated it was frustrating seeing his record label release an album for Mr. T, an actor, when they were preventing him, an actual singer, from releasing his own. He toured with Jennifer Holliday in 1985 to promote what would be his final studio album.

His disdain for Columbia's A&R executives or "blaxperts", as he termed them, trying to exert control over how he should sound if he wanted to sell more albums, played a part in his making the decision to not record or re-sign to a record label after 1985, effectively ending his performing career, even though remixes of his previously recorded music were released after his 'retirement'. Finding musical success later in life than most, at 32, he has said he was socialized as a 'regular guy' who had a life before the music, so he did not feel an inherent need to keep recording once he fell out of love with the industry. He has also stated that he does not miss touring and performing live and does not regret leaving music behind.

Withers married actress Denise Nicholas in 1973, during her stint on the sitcom Room 222. The couple divorced the following year. In 1976, Withers married Marcia Johnson, and they had two children, Todd and Kori. Marcia eventually assumed the direct management of his Beverly Hills-based publishing companies, in which his children also became involved as they became adults.

It can prove somewhat difficult to place Bill Withers among his peers. Despite a brief revival thanks to Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, he will always remain something of an outsider to the soul movement. Starting out as an aircraft mechanic for the Navy, his performing career happened more or less by accident. Surprised to be invited to re-record his own demos -- a modest Withers had intended his songs for others -- he came forth with two brilliant albums chock-full of intriguing stories on mournful alcoholics, adulterers, and his late grandmother's hands. His exceptional talent as a storyteller placed him perhaps more in league with West Coast singer songwriters like Stephen Stills, who helped out on his debut, Just as I Am. A Vietnam chant, "I Can't Write Left Handed," placed him further apart as a socially conscious performer. The accompanying album, Live at Carnegie Hall, makes clear Withers is about total commitment to the music and music alone. Once called "the poet Stax never had" by onetime producer Booker T., his influence on artists like Ben Harper and Erykah Badu is not to be taken lightly. Much of the above can be said about Making Music. Because of the regretful demise of Withers' original label, Sussex, his fifth album was released on Columbia. It possesses the same down-to-earthiness and eye for ordinary day life as his former releases, though the production sometimes trades the organic "feel" for the familiar "end of the '70s slickness." He's excused since at least he didn't turn disco! No dancing across the floor for Bill: friends and family is what remains important to him, as becomes evident from the portrait on the album cover's backside and in songs like "Family Table" and "Don't You Want to Stay." Even when a song does not seem to have a subject but itself ("Sometimes a Song"), Withers and band deliver it with an urgency that would make Barry White shiver. To stay on the subject: instead of White wondering "what he's going to do with you," wouldn't you rather have Withers "Make Love to Your Mind"?

Anybody who likes Bill is going to want to have this. Laid back and smooth, it's classic Withers. The title is provocative but the music is like a warm blanket on a cold night or perhaps, more apropos for Soul Music,a fan on a hot one, this album delivers the goods. Bill Withers sound has always been funky. But he never recorded an all out funk album but this one comes closest. That focus on the spesific type of groove along with the strong writing made this out in the end to be one of Wither's finest (and often least sung) records. It's not the only album of Bill Withers' to have, but if you want to go for the next round this has to be part of the ride.

Following the twin peaks of Still Bill and Live at Carnegie Hall in the early '70s, Bill Withers had a little trouble sustaining his peak of creativity, along with his chart positions. He still made good music and had hits, but had trouble delivering a consistent album that brought him back to the heights of his Sussex work. Finally, in 1977, he delivered Menagerie, an assured return to form by one of soul's greatest singer/songwriters of the '70s. If Menagerie doesn't have the earthiness or consistent brilliance of Still Bill, it nevertheless has a solid set of songs and an easy, relaxed charm that is thoroughly winning. Where his Sussex material was slyly eclectic, touching on a number of different styles, this album is more cohesive, a smooth album that points the way toward quiet storm while retaining a warm soulfulness, largely due to Withers' wonderful voice. Even when the tempo gets sprightly, as on "Lovely Night for Dancing," there's a relaxed vibe and a nice sheen to the production that keeps things even-handed and easy. As such, those listeners who preferred the darker undercurrents that ran through such songs as "Use Me" and "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?" may find this a little too amiable, but that's just a matter of taste -- this is an easy record to like, after all, with a consistent tone and a soothing vibe, plus a good set of songs. If it's not as distinctive as his Sussex records, it's nevertheless an undeniable high point in his catalog.

Even though his previous Columbia album 'Bout Love had been a commercial disappointment,Bill Withers found enormous success singing with Grover Washington Jr at the beginning of the 80's on the huge pop hit Just The Two Of Us,not to mention a similar vocal on the Crusaders Soul Shadows during the same year. Suddenly Bill Withers career was showing signs of success again only thing time, his musical priorities had changed a bit. So on this album, recorded eight years following his previous one, he teamed up with big name producers and session musicians such as David Foster,Ralph McDonald and Paulinho Da Costa along with guests such a Larry Carlton for an album that thoroughly explored his new musical focus.

The production of these snappy, mid tempo urban contemporary pop/funk grooves is built around live instrumentation. This can be heard to even greater effect on the uptempo boogie funk type production of "Don't Make Me Wait". For a singer/songwriter/musician of his nature, his music has always somehow been flexible enough to accommodate many of the production changes time has demanded, yet still maintain it's own signature. Applying that to this particular album in fact I'd have to say if this is where he chose to cap off his career, even though it never got a proper follow up,would'nt be at all a bad place to conclude things at all.

RhoDeo 1819 Aetix

Hello,

Today's artists are a post-punk/indie rock band formed in 1981 in Leeds, originally consisting of guitarist Jon Langford (co-founder of the Mekons), vocalist John Hyatt and bassist Phillip "John" Brennan, augmented by a drum machine. The band initially formed just before the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, and their first gig was to be part of a "Funk the Wedding" event, but they were refused permission to play because they were drunk. They signed to CNT Records in 1982, which Langford jointly founded, releasing two singles and an EP for the label. A reworking of the Mekons' "English White Boy Engineer", which attacked hypocritical attitudes towards South Africa and apartheid, led to the band being labelled as left-wing rockers. The band explained: "We're not a socialist band. We're a group of socialists who are in a band. It's a fine distinction but an important one  ..............N'Joy

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

A side group started in 1982 by Mekons co-founder Jon Langford, the Three Johns, originally made up of Langford, John Hyatt, Phillip "John" Brennan, and a drum machine, specialized in abrasive, politically charged, danceable rock. Sounding almost nothing like Langford's main band, the Johns were a silly-serious bunch of political and cultural provocateurs. Recording during the height of Margaret Thatcher's ill-conceived Tory rebellion, the Johns were openly antagonistic to this new, conservative vision of Britain's future. And while their elliptical and epigrammatic lyrics might not offer the sloganeering that would easily identify them as lefties, certainly there were enough hints dropped along the way to remove any doubt. Unlike other rock agit-prop, the Johns played a fairly accessible version of polemical post-punk anti-pop that embraced big, messy arena-rock-sounding guitars and hard, repetitive, quasi-hip-hop dance beats. Perhaps the most subversive thing about the Johns is that, despite Langford's and Hyatt's goofy vocals, they were, in their own weird way, pure pop for now people, especially those who hated Thatcher. With collective tongue planted firmly in cheek, the Johns took on British and American obsession with materialism, the diabolical Reagan-Thatcher lovefest, the machinations of the pop music industry, all of it done with a great sense of humor mixed in with genuine fear and horror. Frequently hard to pin down, the Johns reveled in being slippery, exhibiting a love and loathing for pop music. In some respects, the Johns resembled friends and fellow Leeds, England mates the Gang of Four, but where the Gang of Four was dour and serious (bordering on academic), the Johns were loutish and boisterous, which when combining politics and rock & roll can, ultimately, be a good thing. The band recorded six sessions for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, and reached No. 14 in the 1985 Festive Fifty with "Death of the European".

The band split up in late 1988 after a disastrous US tour, but reformed in 1990, releasing Eat Your Sons, a concept album about cannibalism, before splitting again. Langford continued with the Mekons, later releasing a solo album, while Hyatt concentrated on his academic career. They reformed again in 2012, playing five shows, and have continued to perform intermittently ever since in the UK, mostly in the Manchester and Leeds-Bradford areas.

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

After releasing a slew of singles and EPs, the Johns' debut LP consists of the political pop damage that had made their earlier chunks of noise so much fun. The Three Johns presented a more casual take on the gothic-rock of Bauhaus and The Birthday Party, thus paving the way for what came to be called indie-rock. "Teenage Nightingales To Wax" and "Do Not Cross The Line" were lively gothic rockers in the vein of Bauhaus, while "3 Junk" quoted The Gun Club's country/ punk-blues, later mounting their own take on the genre with "Missing".

Their rock 'n roll was unrestrained, with such feisty cuts such as "Firepits", but could also be ambitious and elegant, as in the theatrical raga post-punk "No Place". In the meantime, their interpretation of Bauhaus' "Kick in The Eye" in "Dr FreeDom" was loose enough to mark it as a predecessor of 90's slacker-rock. Their own incendiary take on punk-funk with "Sun of Mud" was pure delight, while in "Class War" they created an even freer and more allover the place musical landscape. Atom Drum Bop is loaded with skewed, herky-jerky, unabashedly leftist rock & roll. At the bottom of the jacket it reads, "Rock N' Roll Versus Thatcherism," just in case you were unsure as to how they felt about things. A great record that got lost amid all the glossy Britpop bands of the time with silly haircuts and even sillier names.

Far and away the best Three Johns album. Funnier, sharper, and more focused than Atom Drum Bop, The World By Storm really lets the guitars rip, creating a more manic, tuneful wall of noise behind which the Johns rant and rave. The record featured the three best singles the band ever recorded, "Atom Drum Bop" (this is not a mistake -- there's no song by this title on the LP Atom Drum Bop), "Sold Down the River," and the scaborously funny "Death of the European" (with its John Lydon-like opening lines, "Big mouth/open wide/open up the pearly gates of freedom"). The lyrical concerns are the same as always -- mindless, conspicuous consumption, empty-headed conservatism -- but here the Johns sound more in control, and that begets a ferocity and urgency that makes this a compelling record. The Three Johns cult and Mekons fans lapped this up when it came out, but it was only available in America as an import (still is, as far as I know) and sank without a trace. Too bad, as it was one of the best records of 1986.

A solid collection of most of the early singles and EPs which, had one paid import prices for, would have eaten up the better part of a year's record-buying budget. Decidedly inconsistent, Crime Pays, for the true Three Johns fan, is a necessary purchase, but for those just treading into the murky waters of Johndom, save this purchase for later. RhoDeo 1819 Roots

Hello,

Today's artists were one of the first Andean folk groups to attract international attention. Co-founded by Bolivian composer and charango player Eddy Navia, Savia Andina was a four-piece group dedicated to preserving the most obscure musical traditions of the Andean region. They toured Europe and are sometimes classed in the "new song/nueva cancion" movement of Latin American music. In the 1970s they became the most popular and influential music group in Bolivia, but were later displaced by Los Kjarkas. They are also known for poetic love songs about mountains. They recorded 30 albums that were released in Latin America including three that achieved gold status .... N'Joy

Savia Andina

The Bolivian musical group Savia Andina is the previous result of the union of three friends of the Particular Franciscan Catholic School of the city of Potosí: Gerardo Arias, Eddy Navia and Óscar Castro, who began to compose rock music, forming in 1964 the group "Los  Rebels ".

After two years, Arias and Navia go to Argentina to study higher education, there they form the Arias - Navia duo and recorded three albums in the 70s. On July 15, 1975 Navia and Mejia founded the group and started recording the 1st album  , then they are invited to a tour of Brazil with a Bolivian music ballet, to this event Oscar Castro and Gerardo Arias were also called, thus constituting the original quartet of Savia Andina.

The sap is the vital liquid of the vegetables that contains the necessary nutrients that feed the plant, it is the blood of the vegetables, their essence.  The group adopted the name of Savia Andina, that is to say, the music that gathers the essence of the Andes, the songs of the group are nourished by that sap, creating pieces with a deep flavor to the disappeared people and high Andean hills,  pampering with each instrument the rural and traditional melodies of Bolivia.

2 decades 1975 - 1995 Foundation: July 15, 1975 Eddy Navia and Alcides Mejia The group began to make songs under the name of Savia Andina from 1975, in principle songs of marked rural roots: "Danza del sicuri", "Incallajta  "," Men and peoples "," Novia Santa Cruz "," Cacharpaya del indio "etc.  they mark from the beginnings the musical guidelines of the group.  At that time Gerardo Arias is temporarily absent and his position is occupied by Julio César Paredes.  In 1978 the group performed a unique experiment: they released an album titled "Volume 4" in which they radically break with the style followed until now and look for songs from other countries to record them with Andean instruments and rhythms, highlighting "In a Persian market"  "De Ketèlbey," Kambanes "and" Chorus this leventias "by Dimos Moutsis, this album earned them the opportunity to be known in Europe and Russia by opening the doors to touring those regions.

Already in 1980 the group returns to its usual line and returns to its roots, Gerardo Arias returns and perform important songs such as "El Minero", "Lamento indio", "Por qué estás triste", "A los bosques", "Leño verde"  , "Rosa carmín", "K'alanchito" etc. Also in 1980 they publish the album "El minero", as a tribute to the miners of the tin mines of Bolivia who work in harsh conditions. In 1976 they traveled to the Teatro Olympia in Paris where Julio Iglesias shared the stage, in 1982 with the Symphony Orchestra of San Antonio, Texas.  They continued editing important songs like "El cisne", "Quirquinchito charanguito", "Cumbre", "Tempestad" etc.  That same year they interpret the soundtrack of the Bolivian film "Mi socio".

In 1986, the first Creole guitar from Bolivia was added, Rafael Arias, brother of Gerardo Arias.  They publish more songs: "Potosino soy", "Mujer obrera", "Alas blancas", "Jacha uru" New interpreters: Espinoza, Herrera, Siles and Arias In 1990 Eddy Navia marches to the USA and the charango now passes into the hands of Alfredo Coca, who is then replaced by Donato Espinoza in 1995. Alcides Mejía also leaves the group, and the winds pass into the hands of Edwin Herrera.

With time Savia Andina has given a more romantic character to their songs giving them a touch of modernity, although they have never completely broken that bond of union with the rural, jungle and old that marked their first pieces, in the 90s they compose songs like  "La mentirosita", "Vivo enamorado", "Sangre Andina", "Patron of my nation", "Urkupiña", "Estefanía" etc. In 1995 they released the album "Antología de la música boliviana", a collection of pieces that are born and evoke the main populations of Bolivia: La Paz, Tarija, Beni, Oruro, Santa Cruz etc. Already in the present decade they compose the last songs: "Luzmila ñustita", "My partner", etc.

In 2004 they repeat the 1995 experiment and edit "Viva Bolivia" where they return to collect compositions dedicated to the peoples of Bolivia. Also in 2004 they release their first DVD "Savia Andina en concierto" where they review the most popular songs of the group. In 2006 they commemorate the anniversary of the group "30 años", that same year the members of the group are attended in the Chamber of Deputies to receive a medal in recognition of their cultural work. At this time Edwin Herrera leaves the group and the winds pass into the hands of Luis Siles, the group also integrates Martin Arias, son of Gerardo Arias and nephew of Rafael, is responsible for playing the bass.  In 2009 they record "The story continues", a CD plus a DVD sold together where they compile ten new songs.

A spirited collection of traditional Andean music, a tribute to the band that is dedicated to preservation of the musical culture of the people of Andes Mountains in South America. The blend of charango, wooden flutes, percussion and five-string guitar is a sound not soon forgotten. The Andean music collected here presents a colorful, upbeat almost carefree and deeply spiritual people.

Listening to the records of Savia Andina is sincerely gratifying as well as remembering some of the emotions one has experienced.  The best version of "Jacha Uru" is interpreted by Savia Andina.  A special mention for Rafael, in the theme "Where the Sentimiento comes from," since he returns to play the same theme with the Duo Sentimiento.  Oscar Castro, master of percussion and author of several instrumental tracks brings us on this album, that theme dedicated to our most beloved ones: "Mis Padres".  Always reflecting the feeling of his homeland (Potosí) and even more with the identification of that mining city, is what is heard in "Lamento Minero".

Rhodeo 1819 Space F 5

Hello, Hamilton cruised to victory in an as expected rather boring race, the start took out 3 cars another 3 didn't reach the finish, Vettel changed tires twice it cost him his second place and overtaking Max (even with a slightly damaged car) wasn't worth the risk he came in fourth well in front of Ricciardo who scored fastest lap but had a big spin too. In short Mercedes back on top. Over at The Giro Simon Yates extended his lead by winning his, he looks well on his way of becoming the best british race cyclist as Froome looks totally out of sorts. Dumoulin is still close but it looks he will have a hard time winning the Giro again...

Hello, oh dear some squealing piglet with a song about how it would like to be a chicken has won the Eurovision contest, those stupid goyim don't even get it when they are ridiculized, ah yes Jerusalem calling.... F1 does Barcelona this weekend Verstappen and Ricciardo get to battle it out again a few hundredths of a sec separating them qualifying 5th and sixth, pole position once again Lewis a shade in front of teammate Bottas, a slightly surprising tenth back Vettel. It should be noted that when qualifying on the tires they'll start the race on Hamilton was 4th, 3 tenth behind Ferrari could be plenty of close racing coming up tomorrow-and there's a slight chance of rain...

Plenty of great stuff today..make space

Today's artist is an Italian guitarist, producer, arranger, sound designer, and experimentalist, and plays in many bands.

2006 release from this collaboration project from Raiz (former vocalist with Almamegretta), Bill Laswell, and Eraldo Bernocchi. This album is a mixture of Electronic music, Dub, Pop, Reggae and Mediterranean sounds.

Milanese electronic producer and manipulator Eraldo Bernocchi in the company of Raiz's unique voice and the low-key but greatly respected Bill Laswell, musician and producer who boasts numerous collaborations.  The music produced by Ashes is a perfect synthesis of the styles of these three great characters and ranges from the Mediterranean digital dub so dear to Almamegretta lovers to at moments more energetic and electronic than they wink at the most "intelligent" dance and the most contaminated and innovative world music, all dominated by Raiz's warm and always personal voice.  "Unisono" contains ten tracks, eight unreleased tracks and two suggestive covers.
"Guapparia" is a classic of the rebel Neapolitan song and is reproposed in the reggae-dub version while "Set The Controls" is a cover of Pink Floyd interpreted in a hypnotic and personal way.  The first single from the album is "Amparame Dios", an energetic piece written in the balance between reggae, dub and dance.

Eraldo Bernocchi is an Italian musician, producer and sound designer. Thomas Fehlmann is a Swiss-born composer/producer who currently lives in Berlin, and has been active in electronic music as far back as the 1980s. He is an on and off member of such groups as Sun Electric and The Orb. This is difficult music to describe because it does not fall into any specific categories. Although elements of dub techno, experimental electronica, noise, ambient and found sounds are in the mix Manual delivers something that is totally unique. Very well produced throughout every track comes up with a fresh theme and manages to sound alien and otherworldly yet always engaging. As time goes by it becomes harder and harder to come up with truely original music. These guys have done it.

From its heavy stone dropping bass to cinematic orchestration, beautiful piano melodies, and progressive dowtempo electronic beats, this collaboration between Eraldo Bernocchi and Blackfilm is an amazing find and addition to the Danish dark electronic label, Vital. Designed as a soundtrack for those lonely nights, walking through abandoned streets and skeleton buildings, Along The Corridors will keep you on the edge of your seat, with your imagination as the only projector for the cinema of your mind.  Blackfilm, who continues to remain anonymous, is a Hungarian artist that was first introduced to us through his self-titled debut on the now defunct Spectraliquid Records. Since then, the album has been picked up by Denovali Records and repressed in 2010 on compact disc and vinyl. His dark atmospheric soundscapes and a bricolage of modern classical samples and instrumental hip-hop beats reminded me of my favorite works by Amon Tobin and Future Sound of London, for a brooding soundtrack enveloping your mind with heavy fog of penetrating sound. Since the release, Blackfilm has relocated to London where he has embedded himself with the heavyweights of dub and even darker journeys in the underground. Anyway dubfans shouldn't miss out here.

Italian producer Eraldo Bernocchi invited ambient/minimalist piano pioneer Harold Budd and former Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie (who had collaborated earlier on several projects) to join him in Tuscany for this recording, on which Budd contributes the most sonically central piano parts and Bernocchi and Guthrie add sumptuously ethereal background noise. The result is both blissfully soothing and consistently interesting, although the most interesting things are actually happening in the background, among the steam clouds and wispy layers of sound that provide aural context for Budd's noodlings. Much of what Budd plays is based on pentatonic melodies, which sound nice no matter what you do. (This is a trade secret of new age musicians: stick with a pentatonic scale, and nothing you play will sound wrong.) But those simple melodies are highly effective, and the floating accompaniments are absolutely gorgeous: there are electronic effects in there, but what are most audible are the shimmering guitar chords and seemingly infinite piano echoes that Bernocchi and Guthrie shape and reshape as they drift away into the distance. The end result is utterly gorgeous and deeply comforting music.
