In From The Cold

In from the cold, the heart is warmed by singing and making music, giving colour to the wide open (snowy) landscape.

Listen ... Listen with your heart.
Remember all we are and all that's
come before your ... and hear the Roar

Loreena McKennitt, is undoubtedly the most well known of the female artists i present today, born in heartland Canada with irish/scottish heritage, Loreena adopted the Celtic harp as her main instrument and Ireland as her spiritual home. She's a musician looking for connections between music, culture and the spirit, her journeys have taken her from Canada to Ireland, Morocco to Siberia. Her music is rooted in Celtic traditions but much of her best work incorporates elements from Medieval England, Spain and North Africa.

Loreena McKennitt started out as a street musician, released albums on her own Quinlan Road label and then became world renowned after the release of "The Visit" . On offer here ,The book of secrets was released 9 years ago highly acclaimed and commercially succesfull, tragedy struck a year later when her fiancee , his brother and a friend died in a boating accident. She more or less retreated , released a live benefit album in 99 . Fans had to wait a long time but the good news is, next month she will release a new album An Ancient Muse

Mari Boine

Sápmi, which reaches down the north-west coast of Norway, across the top of Sweden and, its southern edge veering north of the Arctic Circle, stretches eastward into northern Finland and the Kola peninsula of north-west Russia, is the homeground of the Sámi race. Estimates vary, but there are much less than 100,000 people - perhaps 75,000 or fewer - who might reasonably be described in terms of heredity, lifestyle or language as Sámi. They have never been a nation, and speak several mutually non-comprehensible languages of the Finno-Ugrian linguistic group, the most prevalent of them being North Sámi, the one spoken by Mari Boine.

Mari Boine's sound is powerful expressive organic-sounding world music, musically both primal and sophisticated at the same time. One buzz-word when Sámi music is mentioned is shamanism; the word originates with the Tungus people of Siberia, and what is generally accepted as shamanism is found in many parts of the world, but it does seem to be a word that observers utter whenever a Sámi bangs a drum. It follows that Mari's music is best experienced live, where she can express her presence in the music best.

Gjallarhorn

In Norse mythology, the Giallarhorn or Gjallarhorn ("ringing horn") is the horn with which the gatekeeper god, Heimdallr, announces Ragnarök. In 1997 Gjallarhorns first cd Ranarop was released, remastered in 2002. The group was selected "Folk music group of the year 1997" and the CD was "Folk music CD of the year 1997" in Finland.

The songs deal with mystical events, witches and gods and the woes of the sea, old minuets, ballads and waltzes of Sweden and Swedish speaking Finland are given new life in the hands of this band. Instead of synthesizers, they rely heavily on the droning rasp of the didgeridoo, which lends both a modern feel and an ancient tone to most of the songs. Jenny Wilhelms voice is splendid, beautiful, but with a slightly sharp befitting edge..

Thanks so much for the Japan Rho!

Been trying to get hold of the remastered version for ages...sounds great with your OGG files too...good to get decent versions of 'The Experience Of Swimming' & 'The Width Of A Room', which I had as B-Sides originally.

Not familiar with the other posts, so I'll give them a try...

Sorry im late reacting here Puschkin-i had the comment moderation setting on, forgot all about it. I wonder if you use nero for cd ripping/burning, if so there's an excellent piece of freeware i use, it produces top rips and doesnt mind securities. German soundfreak production, EAC you can get it here.

Hello Lee you confuse me here, you mention albums that are not present here.. what is it that you want ? I assume you made a mistake as one of my first posts had a in from the cold subtitle

Mick said...

Rho, the Japan album stands out as a sore thumb here with all the new age albums. I trust it wasn't intentional.

Rho said...

Well Mick these are certainly no New Age albums the theme here can be seen as haunting and cold , cool if you will. Infact Japan is a gimme here as i just acquired the remixed version of Gentlemen. That said I was just starting out this was only my 7th posting 115 months ago.
