RhoDeo 1418 Beats

Hello,

These months of French rule of the beats come to full gestation tonight, yes it's been 39 weeks and we found out that being somewhat shielded from the dominating control by the Anglo - American music industry, let the French enjoy themselves in their own niche so to speak, and they did rather well. Today a producer who has been one of the biggest influence of the electronic scene for the past few years. Reaching not only the top of the European club charts but also generating sales exceeding the hundred thousands, he has been the youngest electronic producer to reach a broad audience. ..N'joy

Come on, come on! When does talent like this come around? Martin Laurent Picandet was raised in France on classical music, and classically trained to be a soprano soloist by François Polgár. At the age of 13, he was gifted a set of turntables that triggered him to expand his musical taste to electronica.

At 18, while working in a local record store, he further discovered the complexity of electronic music, and shortly thereafter was spinning at some of the most prestigious clubs in Paris as Martin Solveig . While working in the clubs, he found and developed the house and Eurodance genre he is famous for. In 2001 Solveig worked with Bob Sinclar on Africanism, contributing his track "Edony" to the album. The single went on to be a hit, and after graduating from college, the DJ decided to release a full-length record.

Sur la Terre -- which came out in 2002 on his own label, Mixture, and was made using both live and electronic instrumentation -- was also inspired by African rhythms, leading to a remix of Malian singer Salif Keita's song "Malan." In 2004 Solveig decided to move toward American funk and rock, releasing "Rocking Music," sung by Jay Sebag, followed by another full-length, Hedonist, in 2005. A third album, C'est la Vie, was issued in 2008, but it was only with his fourth effort, 2011's aptly-titled Smash, that he finally broke through into the mainstream, Solveig has caught the attention of a large European audience with songs like “Hello” and “The Night Out” (which was remixed by fellow French producer/DJ Madeon).

After years honing his craft on the French clubbing circuit, 2011 saw Martin Solveig achieve true international superstardom. Selling over two million copies of his hit single "Hello" earned him global recognition and put him on the 2012 billing of some of the world’s biggest festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Coachella, Tomorrowland and Electric Daisy Carnival among others. These tracks became hits in the States, where they can still be found blasting in nightclubs. All this attracted the interest of Madonna, she chose him to work on her album MDNA, and the pair developed a mutual respect and a close working relationship in the studio, producing six tracks for Madonna’s 2012 "MDNA" album. Followed by accompanying the Pop-Queen on multiple dates across her world tour, 2013 saw Martin challenge his creativity in more spontaneous ways, working with newcomers such as "The Cataracs" and young rapper "Kyle" to release one of 2013's summer anthem's "Hey Now".

An accident with a festival CO2 cannon sparked Martin’s latest, most creative project yet - BLOW. What was originally planned as a collaborative club track with Laidback Luke quickly evolved into an innovative 5-part video project unlike anything ever seen before. Several quirky commercials about a mysterious product coined "The Spray of Life" piqued the viewers' curiosity, swiftly followed by a hilarious music video that revealed the full story and extent of Solveig's imagination.  With no intention of slowing down, Martin is currently back in the studio working on fresh material and gearing up for his summer 2014 residencies. Bringing his thumping, fun-filled sounds to the shores of Ibiza and bright lights of Vegas, 2014 is set to be Martin’s biggest year yet!

Martin Solveig also hosts a weekly radio show called C’est La Vie on stations worldwide such as FG DJ Radio in his homeland. He has his own label called Mixture Stereophonic. With his first entry in the Top 100 DJs by DJ Magazine , he was #72. Since then, he has been in an up or down position in the list. He also did collaborations with Dragonette, Kele of Bloc and Madonna.

Those expecting to hear an album resembling the disco pastiche of the recent chart topping club smash, "Rocking Music", may be a little surprised by Martin Solveig's varied debut long-player. Granted, the follow-up single, "I'm A Good Man", with a vocal that oozes of the rawness of James Brown, is equally laced with funky retro Hammond organ riffs, and should maintain his support from within the club market. That said, the balance of the album is largely comprised of Afro-rhythms, Latin-grooves and rich world music influences aimed at an existing fan-base from which Solveig carved his earlier recording career.

This is typified on tracks like "Mr President" and "Madan" - numbers ripened by the sounds and flavours of the African continent; the latter also featuring the musicianship of Salif Keita - widely credited as the creator of Afro-beat, of which, Martin is clearly a fan. Even the French lyrics of "Linda" cannot mask comparisons of Hugh Masekela in his prime.

Sur La Terre (On The Earth) is also a retrospective of the Frenchman's work to date and a fusion of his many varied influences. From the Eartha Kitt-sounding earthy vibe of "On My Mind" to the bass-heavy spoken Afro-beater "Heart Of Africa" (complete with soaring sax accompaniment), and the chilled sun-kissed smooth jazz of the title-track.

Still in his twenties, Sur La Terre is a particularly mature album, showcasing Martin Solveig's ability to juggle from the disco-pop of his recent success, to the complex and intoxicating rhythms of the third world. And, whilst some may be a little disappointed that it's not geared towards the former blueprint created by "Rocking Music", this album is all the richer for that. Recommended.
