Sundaze 1133

Hello, on this Earth collaboration often produces the best results, yet we steadfastly keep awarding our attention to personalized efforts. However creating a sound together can be a difficult process, on the other hand the awards of synergies amazing. Today 3 pairs Canadian guitarist/producer Michael Brook teams up with The Edge as well as singer/keyboardist Piter Nooten, finally heavyweight Bill Laswell links up with Terre Thaemlitz, then still at the start of his career create a mysterious digital landscape the named Web. This music was written for Captive, a somewhat obscure European thriller. The album's only single is the track "Heroine," features vocals by Sinead O'Connor who composed it and would be included in her greatest-hits album. Those expecting a U2 album (or an Edge solo effort) will be disappointed. "Heroine" is the only pop song here, with the other tracks being instrumentals. However, this collaboration with Canadian Michael Brook (who has worked with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Brian Eno and contributed to Peter Gabriel's score to Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ) has some value, for it shows the Edge evolving in different directions than the supergroup. An interesting bit of trivia here: Brook invented the "infinite guitar," which Edge would use to atmospheric heights on "With or Without You" shortly after Captive was completed. Worth checking out....

This collaboration between Pieter Nooten (from Xymox) and ambient, experimental guitarist Michael Brook spawns an excellent album. Sleeps With the Fishes comprises 15 excellent, moody soundscapes, given depth by Nooten's subtle vocals and instrumentation that sounds piped in from some dreamy other world. Brook's guitar rings and chimes, sounding cleaner, and his guitar work is more precise than ever. Synthesizers creep in and around the vocals and guitar to stunning effect. The album seems to define the word "mysterious." Nooten's vocals are gloomy, yet angelic as he sings about walking over clouds and worlds of unease. His voice is as much of an instrument as any other element in the songs; it's not important which lyrics are decipherable and which are not, as the vocals work mostly as a highlight to the mood-setting instrumentation. Sleeps With the Fishes is quite dark, but it's equally beautiful and uplifting in the same instance. Nooten and Brook are restrained in the creation of their moody aesthetic, but the songs are a delight from start to finish. It's essential listening for fans of Sundaze...

There are several posts here on the artists involved here, Bill Laswell and Terre Thaemlitz in case you want to more about these artists do a search here and you get the pages. WEB is some of the most abrasive, industrial leaning ambient of either of these composers' careers. Chains rattle, voices whisper menacingly, and dark, dissonant textures and deep bass drones collide on a trio of extended tracks united by the questionably thematic topic of digital communications technology.
