Sundaze 2032

Hello,

Today's artistis are a New Zealand electronica duo from Christchurch. ..... N'Joy

Mike and Paddy met in 1996. Since then they have released five albums, four remix albums and been on six world tours.

Their debut album, Futureproof, released in August 1998, rose to the top of the New Zealand electronic charts, despite no marketing or advertising. Their second album, Electronomicon, followed in September 2000[3], and led to a 30-date tour of New Zealand and Australia. Both albums spawned remix projects, featuring mixes by local luminaries such as International Observer, Epsilon Blue and Downtown Brown.

Their third album, Ape to Angel, released in New Zealand on 4 October 2004, gained critical acclaim. The "Ape to Angel" tour was the biggest to date, with 42 shows across the world, including their debut performances in United States. The remixes of this came out in New Zealand and Australia under the name "Halfway: between Ape and Angel" and in Europe and America as "Frequencies Fall.

Their fourth studio album was "Rude Mechanicals", released in 2007: it came out on the band's own label, Remote Recordings, in Australia and New Zealand; on the Wakyo label in Japan; and on Dubmission Records elsewhere in the worl The remixes of this album came out as "Rhythm, Sound and Movement" in May 2009.

The fifth Pitch Black record "Filtered Senses" came out on September 2nd 2016, and was followed by a remix collection, "Invisible Circuits", on July 7th 2017

Their sixth studio album "Third Light" was released on September 13th 2019 and followed with a tour of New Zealand in October and Europe in November[. A remix collection, "The Light Within", followed on July 10th 2020.

Pitch Black songs have been used on a variety of international film and media, such as Whale Rider and CSI: Miami. Also they have worked with Metia Interactive's Cube game for the PlayStation Portable, designing sound, and contributing music.

Futureproof is a quite startling collection of dubby, moody - occasionally dark - Electronica tracks, and a piece of work deservedly awarded the NZ Electronic album-of-the-year upon its initial release back in 1999.

It's easy to see why - not only did this release raise the bar for all local pretenders within the genre, it also convinced this observer that advances in technology had to a large extent levelled the playing field for "Kiwi" artists seeking to compete with the more established international acts dominating the local scene.

Free and Hodgson honed their considerable skills as a live act well before Futureproof came into being, and the album is essentially the result of taking what worked well in a “live” environment back to the studio to refine it. What they ended up with is a dub-tastic, often ambient, frequently skanking, innovative gem of an album.

Futureproof is an album that I believe will, in due course, come to be seen as THE landmark work for New Zealand electronic music.

Best Tracks: 'The Gathering', 'Speech', and 'Soliton' … but the entire album is consistent in quality.

Recommended for those who enjoy chill-out or dance music with a dub flavour.

Pitch Black’s sophomore album finally gets the European release it so richly deserves. Previously only available as an expensive import, it builds on the success of their debut Futureproof by delving deeper into dance music’s dark side, layering walls of echo and delay over beats and breaks, all underpinned with fat basslines.

To cap it all, this release comes with a bonus disc of remixes and alternative versions taken from their solitary vinyl outing. Youth adds his visionary touch to Electric Earth, Ekto oomphs up Reptile Room for the dancefloor, while legendary bootlegger Downtown Brown takes Unadrumma down on a deep and dirty dub workout.

One for all lovers of good music and big basslines ……..

Ape to Angel may be the third record from Pitch Black in five years, but the two members of the New Zealand act had been accumulating experience in electronic music and production since the late '80s. The experience shows on Ape to Angel, a hypnotic recording that combines dub, dark trance and sampling. "Big Trouble Upstairs" is the closest they get to a dance club vibe, borrowing a little from the trippy work of Underworld. Otherwise, this is a chillout collection which relies as much on higher-end sounds as it does on deep bass grooves. The only thing that disrupts the vibe a tad are the vocals by Sandy Mill on "Elements Turn," which are a little too R&B and don't seem necessary when the rest of the album is relying on programming. Either way, Ape to Angel still fits appropriately into the Waveform catalog.

Pitch Black - Ape To Angel ( flac 465mb)

01 Ape to Angel 8:26
02 Freefall 5:41
03 Lost in Translation 8:14

Unfortunately the "Electronomicon Black" link is missing. Can you correct the problem? Thanks!
