Troum is a German project of drone music, ambient music, noise music, and experimental music. It was founded in the late 1990s by Stefan Knappe (a.k.a. Baraka[H]) and Martin Gitschel (a.k.a. Glit[S]ch). It is sometimes considered to be the follow-up project to Maeror Tri. Stefan Knappe is also the founder and owner of Drone Records.
TROUM is a duo located in Bremen, Germany, established in early 1997. The two members "Glit[S]ch" and "Baraka[H]" were active before in the influential ambient/industrial group MAËROR TRI (which existed from 1988 to 1996). TROUM is the old German word for "DREAM". The dream is seen as a central manifestation of the unconscious, and symbolizes the aim of TROUM to lead the listener into a hypnotizing dream-state of mind, a pre-verbal and primal consciousness sphere. TROUM uses music as the direct path to the Unconscious, pointing to the archaic "essence" of the humans inner psyche. TROUM tries to create music that works like a direct transformation of unconscious matter.
TROUM's creations are influenced by post-industrial, minimal and drone-music. Both members use guitar, bass, voice, accordion, balalaika, flute, mouth-organ, melodica, gong, field recordings, pre-recorded-tapes and a diversity of sound-objects to build a kind of multi-layered and highly atmospheric dreaming-muzak. Their sound could be described as “dark atmospheric ambient industrial”, "transcendental noise" or just “Tiefenmusik”. TROUM doesn't work with samplers or computer-soundsources, the sounds are created "by hand" to reach a broader sensibility. TROUM uses a spiral as their logo, expressing the trance-inducing potential of the music and the wish to reach inner, deeper spheres of the mind with it. Music as a door to unknown & alien dimensions. Music as an expression of the mystery of existence itself.

In Advaita Vedanta, Turiya is the state where any subject/object relationship is abolished, and the knower becomes what he knows. This record provides an analogous experience, since one does not just listen to this music but unavoidably becomes part of it. Troum and Yen Pox have created an unaccessible but eternal piece of art that transcends narrow genre definitions. This is not your ordinary minimal ambient drone folks.
The album starts off with incredible low bass rumbles, and slowly blurry sounds start to rise from the depths. As the album progresses, more layers are added and substracted, building to beautiful melody-like sounds. 4 tracks, which flow into eachother very nicely, making it very good for continuous, uninterrupted listening. The album seems to get better and better when it nears its end, which is absolutely amazing. From this collaboration came, for me, the best dark ambient album ever. The outerworldly beautiful sounds cannot be described, you have to hear it for yourself. The whole album is very atmospheric, dream-like. It manages to keep the listener's attention by slow, but noticable changes, its all very dynamic.
This album is Troum and Yen Pox's absolute masterpiece and I cannot recommend it highly enough for those who like dark ambient.

Recorded over a period of almost two years, this album is the first installment in a planned series of three. It could be described as a ritual of passage from the influential post-industrial trio Maeror Tri to its new incarnation as the duo Troum. The basic elements of Maeror Tri's sound have been taken apart and split into three categories: harmonies, drones, and rhythms. Of course, you cannot really isolate one from the others unless you decide to take a hardcore minimal path -- and that's not what Troum chose to do. The difference between harmony and drone is small, and you won't be able to make it out by comparing this album to Tjukurrpa, Pt. 2: Drones. The material does sound harmonically richer than usual, and one could suspect that some use of a just intonation system was involved, but beyond this subtle nuance the music remains true full-fledged Maeror/Troum music. Each track consists of a rich, slowly evolving drone made of guitar soundscapes and synthesizers. The opening "Wrota Sfer" takes 16 minutes to unfold its numerous sonic threads -- wherever you set your inner eye, there always seems to be more of them. "Skaun[ei]s" sounds surprisingly peaceful. The guitar even slips out of the drone to cut out a motif that hints at a melody. "Mada Shaunda" features a pounding rhythm of a tribal nature, which makes it stick out. Overall more serene than Tjukurrpa, Pt. 2: Drones or Maeror Tri's material in general, this album still provides an absorbing listen.

"Tjukurrpa" is a word in the language of the Warlpiri, an aboriginal tribe in central Australia. It refers to the essence of living, the unifying factor between body and spirit -- not a word you toss around carelessly. The duo Troum uses it as the generic title for a triptych. The first volume was subtitled Harmonies, the third Rhythms. Part two focuses on Drones. This all-encompassing trilogy doesn't lack ambition and, judging by this second installment, it lives up to its expectations. This CD contains one hour of rich, dense, trance-inducing drones, but they are not soothing at all. They won't lull you to sleep or comfort you in your image of the world. On the contrary, they aim to question, disquietude being a tool for (re)discovery. This group is two-thirds of the defunct post-industrial outfit Maori Tri. Its trademark multi-layered guitar drones have reincarnated here, leaving loops and pulses behind. In each of the five pieces, music comes out of and dives back into silence. Textures generated by electric guitar and electronics appear rapidly, then move slowly, exclusively drone-based. Over-saturation is cleverly used, especially in "Dhren" (the Indo-European root for "to drone, murmur"), the disc's highlight. The closer, "Tiefenrausch," spends most of its ten minutes with a canny sound, coming into focus only toward the end -- not necessarily a bad idea, but it fails to convince in this case. It remains a minor blemish on an otherwise fine release.

This is the third part in TROUMs Tjukurrpa-trilogy, following part 1 (harmonies) and part 2 (drones). This final part is dedicated to “rhythms” and “pulsations”, with a focus on rhythmic, pounding, looping & repetitive elements and structures.
With TJUKURRPA 3, TROUM shows a not so well known side, using the trance-power of repetitive textures. In every of the seven extensive tracks (playtime 66+ min) rhythms in various moods build the basis: from smooth ambience-pulsations over ritualistic surroundings up to ecstatic pounding harshness, from underneath & soft pulsative patterns up to evolving harsh & overwhelming rhythmic loops.
The music on Tjukurrpa III is made by raw & processed loops & handplayed percussion, along with electric guitar & bass, balalaika, mouth organ, male & female human voice, flute, and accordeon. No samplers, synths or computers used.
The aboriginal word "Tjukurrpa", translated as "dreamtime", should symbolize the aim to build music that creates a dreamy state of mind, music of yearning, meditation and inner movement. The "Tjukurrpa"-trilogy shows the three basic musical spheres of TROUM, "harmonies", "drones" and "pulsations": This third part presents the rhythmic, pulsative & loopy side of TROUM.
This work is dedicated to the basic pulses of nature that create all life-forms.
