Hello,
There are DJs and then there are selectors -- individuals whose ability to choose what records people want to hear overtakes the need for turntable skills. Just having the stamp of approval on a record is enough to qualify it as good. Often, these gifted ears find their way onto the radio, and in time get digitized. ....N'Joy

An original Kiss FM DJ when it was still a pirate station illegally broadcasting across London, Dale made it his mission to deliver the best in techno and house to the masses. Much like DJs Giles Peterson did for acid jazz and Fabio did for jungle, Dale was distinctly influential in carving out the taste of London technoheads in the '90s. He is one of the very few UK house & techno djs that has kept his attention focused on a not-so-obvious, yet of exceptional quality, releases. This 12-track compilation includes tracks by Scratch Massive, David Alvarado, EBE, Kevin Yost, Firefly, Vince Watson, Ian O'Brien and others, crossing the boundaries between techno, deep & jazzy house and atmospheric nu-jazz, you'll love this fine selection of soulful electronica.

Ex-Filter front man and now Island Blue A&R Ross Allen follows in the mix footsteps (decksteps?) of Ian O'Brien and Colin Dale with his own take on the Abstract Funk Theory. The selection reflects the eclecticism of his "Destination In" radio show on London Live. If nothing else is noted about dance-music culture at the tail end of the 1990s, the works of labels such as Ninja Tune, Warp, Talkin Loud and the efforts of a number of DJs holds testament to the fusion of electronic music with the turntablism of hip-hop and the rawness of drum & bass. Allen's selection reflects this genre-bending revolution with a top drawer selection that sees the breakbeat of Randy Crawford and Carl Craig's 69 Project sitting comfortably with the warm techno of Norken and some top-notch seventies funk courtesy of the Harry Roche Constellation. The inclusion of the highly sought after Global Communication mix of Lamb's "Gorecki," which twists the vocal of Louise Rhodes around a pulsing bassline and rattling beats, ensures the recommendation. This is a superb compilation taking in the very best of contemporary music.

A funky-floaty compilation showcasing veteran chill-out Mixmaster Morris' evolution into a modern funk, jazz, house and disco DJ, Abstract Funk Theory also reveals the recent history of ambient as a music that mapped its love of weightless psychedelia onto black sonic forms (something Morris has called "nubient" with reference to nubian). Tracks and productions from Jazzanova, Plaid, Ninja Tune's Fink, Fila Brazilia and Likwid Biskit share a passion for keen rhythm (breakbeats, afro and jazz beats) mellifluous bass lines and lighter-than-air tones of the Fender Rhodes keyboard. Morris has clearly spotted that these artists (from as far afield as Hull, Cologne and Philadelphia) dream alike of a new music born from Alice Coltrane, Larry Levan, LTJ Bukem and sample-culture. It's a (self-consciously) sophisticated aesthetic that leads to adult vocal poems, intricate drum tattoos and both hushed and astral jazz motifs. Crucially the album snares Morris' characteristic bliss, although taking fresh routes to the becalmed otherworld beyond the dance floor.
