RhoDeo 1719 Grooves

Hello,

Today's labels artists The label's name was conceived by artist Joe Bataan, who recorded some of the earliest sessions for the Cayre brothers before the label's formation. "Salsoul" was street lingo for the musical culture of urban Latinos who were listening to soul music and combining it with salsa music . ..... N'joy

Salsoul Records is a New York City based record label, founded by three brothers, Joseph Cayre, Kenneth Cayre, and Stanley Cayre (the Cayre brothers). Salsoul issued about 300 singles, including many disco 12-inch releases, and a string of albums in the 1970s and early 1980s. The label started in business in 1974, went defunct in 1985 and was relaunched in 1992. Artists such as The Salsoul Orchestra (led by Vincent Montana Jr), Instant Funk, Loleatta Holloway, Double Exposure, First Choice, Joe Bataan, Skyy, Carol Williams, Jocelyn Brown, Inner Life and Charo were at one time part of their roster.

The Cayre family had been involved in many entrepreneurial ventures before they manufactured and distributed 8-track tapes, which included Bethlehem Records, in the early 1970s. They had purchased some catalogs of Mexican music to distribute, and infringed on the copyrights of CBS Records and RCA Records by selling them in the United States. They acquired a license for North American distribution for some of CBS's Latino catalog. This led to recording sessions that were distributed by CBS. When CBS was unable to increase profits, the rights reverted to the Cayres.

Ken Cayre sought session musicians to play Philly soul. He worked with the key session players for Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International Records label and its predecessor, Gamble-Huff Productions, founding members of the MFSB Orchestra on Philadelphia International. Gamble and Huff were in dispute with their key musicians over business matters and Salsoul quickly took the chance to put them under contract. Among these Philly soul artists were Vince Montana (orchestral arrangements and vibes), Norman Harris (lead and rhythm guitar, arrangements, songwriting and production), Ronnie Baker (bass guitar, arrangement and production), Earl Young (drums and percussion), Bunny Sigler and others. Baker, Harris and Young are now widely credited with crystallizing the sound and structure of a disco record.

Young's insistent use of the hi-hat cymbal made it easier for disc jockeys to mix records in noisy clubs, as the high frequency of the cymbal stood out over the background noise and could be easily heard in the DJ's headphones. Baker would plant his key bass notes on top of the kick drum, creating a thunderous bass sound. His widely imitated signature style is best heard on the record "Love is the Message" by MFSB.

Montana wrote, arranged, and produced the first Salsoul hit, "Salsoul Hustle" by the newly formed Salsoul Orchestra, which included members of the Philly session players. During the following years, the label enjoyed a string of hits, but Salsoul's biggest successes came in the later years, as the company moved from disco to funk. Instant Funk reached the top of the Billboard R&B chart (No. 20 pop) in 1979 with "Got My Mind Made Up", a million-seller produced by Bunny Sigler, with the group's follow-up album also going gold. Skyy made it to No. 1 R&B in 1981 with "Call Me" (No. 26 pop) and Aurra climbed to No. 6 R&B in the same year with their release, "Make Up Your Mind" (No. 71 pop). Sigler also reached the R&B top 10 in 1978 with his solo single "Let Me Party With You" (No. 8 R&B, No. 43 pop) on the Gold Mind subsidiary.

The Cayres recorded at the same studios, Sigma Sound, as Gamble & Huff in Philadelphia. It was one of the earliest facilities to install 24-track equipment[citation needed] and owned a "live roos" for small orchestras. Many of the remixes and singles were mixed or recorded by Bob Blank at his Blank Tapes Studios in New York, using the then-new technology of automated mixing.

According to Ken Cayre, it was his exposure to early discothèques that gave him the idea to record music for the dance market. Salsoul released the first commercially available 12-inch single, Double Exposure's "Ten Percent", in 1976. Salsoul was affected by the disco backlash of 1979, but it was one of the few labels to survive after the death of disco. It continued to release new material until 1984, when the Cayre brothers shut down their recorded music operations to concentrate on the home video business, such as GoodTimes Entertainment.

In 1992, Salsoul Records was revived as Salsoul New Generation Records (also known as Double J Records). Because of the resurgent interest prompted by Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation", Black Box's "Ride On Time" & Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's "Good Vibrations" in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the label's catalogue was digitally remastered. It is notably more popular in Europe and the United Kingdom than in the United States. Two volumes of remix albums were also issued the same year.

A year after revival, Salsoul changed its name to Bethlehem Music Company, but it still used Salsoul as an imprint, with Bethlehem Music Company focusing on releasing Salsoul material and also Bethlehem's jazz recordings.

Mastercuts compiles an impressive batch of Salsoul nuggets for both volumes of Classic Salsoul Mastercuts. Included on this second volume: Inner Life's powerful version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," Love Committee's dramatic "Just As Long As I've Got You," Double Exposure's "My Love Is Free," First Choice's "Dr. Love," Moment of Truth's "Helplessly," and Eddie Holman's "This Will Be a Night to Remember." Handiwork from remixing pioneers like Shep Pettibone, Walter Gibbons, Tom Moulton, and Larry Levan graces this entire disc. Although Classic Salsoul Mastercuts wasn't the first to highlight some of the label's output, it's still an invaluable and timeless document of some of the finest dance music recorded.

The Definitive Salsoul Mixes '78-'83 is a bountiful set committed to preserving the legacy of the late Larry Levan. It acts as an indispensable complement to Classic West End Records Remixes, replaces the seven-track Larry Levan's Paradise Garage, and is just as essential as Strut's Live at the Paradise Garage -- the last listed being the primary place where you can actually hear him in action as a DJ. Scads of reissues have popped up throughout the years that have anthologized Salsoul's many singles, but none of them have been dedicated to Levan's role in the label's success to this extent. While most of the cuts here were already available through a number of sources, it's great to have them organized in this manner, especially when they've been bundled together with such love for the man who made them work so fantastically on the dancefloor. Primarily a DJ, Levan understood his dancers as well as a studio engineer knows his equipment; this played a major role in how he was able to get the most out of the original mixes that were handed to him. Levan was often at his best when he was given enough to really stretch things out; as with Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat" and "When You Touch Me" (for West End), two remixes that either come close to or eclipse the ten-minute mark, Inner Life's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and Bunny Sigler's "By the Way You Dance" consist of several movements, each of which allows you to appreciate and feast off elements and accents that would've otherwise gone unnoticed or underappreciated in the context of a compacted mix. And allowing space for new components often came in handy, such as the wild Patrick Adams synth freak-out (it lasts as long as the average radio edit) that helps close out that Inner Life anthem. Numerous disco and post-disco classics can be found here, including Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up," First Choice's "Double Cross," Logg's "I Know You Will," and Jimmy Castor Bunch's "It's Just Begun." A handful of mixes previously not available in a commercial sense are included as well. In a couple instances, the sound quality leaves a little to be desired; in the grand scheme of things, it's really a non-issue.

Dimitri from Paris is the ultimate DJ Playboy. His musical influences are rooted in 1970s funk and disco sounds, he plays music that gets the high class socialites shaking their booty’s at times were they would normally be seated on a leather couch perusing the cocktail menu. This French disco mixer likes to dig deep in his crates, so his hour-long mix of classics from the '70s disco label turns out to be half-history lesson and half-collectors' crawl. Beginning with a rare-ish Salsoul Orchestra/Loleatta Holloway collaboration ("Seconds"), My Salsoul skips quite a few of the label's highlights to focus on tracks from obscurists like Rafael Cameron, Carol Williams, and Skyy (the latter's "Here's to You" is present in a Dimitri From Paris remix). Most of the rare songs aren't worth hearing -- major exception: the intense Walter Gibbons remix of Holloway's "Catch Me on the Rebound" -- and though Dimitri does spin a pair of acknowledged classics ("Ten Percent" by Double Exposure and "Let No Man Put Asunder" by First Choice; toward the end, natch), he also turns in the most ephemeral entry in the label's entire catalog: Charo's horridly tacky "Love Boat Theme." My Salsoul never fails to evoke the disco era, 74min of continueous party going on.
