Sundaze 1603

Hello, we're still starting the new year with, what in a sense is the concept behind sundaze music. Ataraxia is a Greek term used by Pyrrho and Epicurus for a lucid state of robust tranquility, characterized by ongoing freedom from distress and worry.

 rather than expecting the others

 their truth.”

Today's artists are one of those "condemned bands" that, due to their style, move between several fan environments. Prog heads, Gothic, lovers of medieval music, etc. have already surrendered to these magic and unclassifiable Italians. Their music takes after infinite sources whose roots belong to classical cultures (Greece and Rome), to the Middle Age, to some texts and to more recent works. Their concerts are always held in places that provide a perfect scenery for their music (abbeys, churches, castles, gardens), and they are always full of theatrical parts, dances, poetry and, definitely, beauty. They are master of the neo-period ambient darkwave sound that comes from combining medieval liturgical chants and subdued Gothic influences. Ataraxia often uses authentic French minstrel material as the basis for their songs. They use simple drum rhythms, basic acoustic guitar sounds, and the nostalgic sound of free flute to accompany the multilingual renaissance harmonies of vocalists Francesca Nicoli and Vittorio Vandelli.......N'joy

Ataraxia is an ensemble that, since many years, works in the balance between avant-garde and tradition writing music, setting up performances and giving concerts consisting of several art forms like theatre, poetry, painting and dance in castles, squares, parks, concert halls, and theatres all over Europe and Latin America. We define ourselves 'craftsmen of the sound' because of the wild, unusual mix of sacred and profane, early and contemporary, neoclassic and experimental music we create. We feel like 'traveling minstrels' inspired by the inner and geographical voyages we make in places that still preserve the charge of centuries and the mystery of history. Walking along old paths and listening to the call of the stone we become a 'living crossroad' between the Mediterranean and Celtic cultures. We make researches and write music about European legends and Greek and Latin myths. Our lyrics are written in several ancient and contemporary languages, we try to give a musical shape to the treasures and revelations hidden inside each language. Contemplation, dream experiences, twilight and elegiac atmospheres, ritual movements and our memories float in the mysterious garden of Psyche and Desire where enveloping textures of notes meet the echo of both acoustic and contemporary instruments. Four minstrels paint whimsical musical landscapes opening passages on far-off dimensions able to stir up emotions and memories. We walk along a path that has its origins in a very far time. The Ancient Spirits are still speaking. Ataraxia's best performances take place in natural or architectural fascinating environments where magic flows as it happened in the primordial drama.

They are a neo-classical band who combine modern technology with archaic instrumentation over various media. Ataraxia describe their music as a cross "between sacred and profane, ethereal and neo-classical, contemporary and early music". They make researches into the European legends crossing the Greek and Latin myths. Contemplation, dreamy experiences, elegiac atmospheres, ritual movements float in a mysterious garden where contemporary textures of notes meet the embracing echo of classic sounds. Their lyrics are written in many ancient and contemporary languages as they try to bring to surface the hidden treasures and revelations that each language owns. Many of their performances take place in locations the band professes to possess specific spiritual qualities.Since the beginning of the group in the late 80's, they released some 25 albums.

Os Cavaleiros is a casket of secrets.Our silent and discreet voyage in a land whose taste is the one of Time has been a sort of initiatory journey through the noble testimonies of stone standing in particular spots of our way. It should be noted that in 1998 Ataraxia edited The Knights Templar (Live in Portugal MCMXCVIII), a record registered in Lisbon and produced by Symbiosis in Portugal. A limited edition of a thousand copies was made in a special box with a CD and VHS, thus becoming a rare piece of collector. According to own "was a kind of tribute to your architectural heritage and the silence we feel so close, our contemplative attitude." "In some of our songs we try to describe this peaceful fullness, the noble simplicity of some of the cathedrals, castles and old ways we visited " We were completely absorbed by the beauty of the historical sites we had opportunity to visit and deeply feel in touch with the solemn and spiritual atmosphere, we feel in some gardens, where the ancient stone mingled harmoniously with the greenery. We find also that through his fluid and sensual sound, the Portuguese language expresses the soul of the place where he was born and graduated.

Ataraxia, present us, after a two year break, with a full CD worth of tracks in the style of "ballads from the Middle Ages". Recorded 2/3s in the studio (in the "Autumn Equinox") and 1/3 live at a Medieval Court (in the "Spring Equinox"), Historiae clocks in at nearly 40 minutes and contains 7 out of 9 tracks which are 'original' compositions (the remaining two being "covers" taken from Carl Orff's choral masterpiece Carmina Burana). "'Original'", as opposed to "original", because these tracks are, fully admittedly, "based" on "ballads from the Middle Ages"  Historiae is probably the "most medieval" (or renaissancehafteste) album of this Italian Neofolkformation and represents a successful blend of percussion-heavy and ambient oriented pieces represent, which a single theme is mostly based on the varying during the respective songs, making them fail very catchy to give rise without monotony. Also contributes to the versatile instrumentation that makes use of both folk instruments and synthesizers.

Each Ataraxia album has a life of its own; there are not two records merely similar and in none of them has quality lacked. In Lost Atlantis they show many years of study on the Atlantis culture, a mythical continent that supposedly submerged thousands of years ago and that has always fascinated the whole human race. For this purpose, the band has gathered classical texts such as the Estrabon’s Geography, the Herodoto’s History, works from Safus, Seneca, Plutarco, etc..

The short instrumental "The early days" takes us directly to "Daytia", a rhythmic topic in which Nicoli’s voice reaches a sublime technique. Not less sublime is "Aperiae", definitely one of the best tracks in the CD. It starts with sea-like sounds and beautiful acoustic guitar parts. The voice here is captivating and, along with the delicate keyboards, brings us to submarine Kingdoms. "Dolphins" shows us an unknown experimental side based on synthesizer sounds that reproduce the language of dolphins. "Agharti" is another beautiful acoustic composition that includes a flute. It gives you goose pimples! Once more, Nicoli’s voice leads us hand in hand through the submarine depths. "Fountains" is dark, tense, mysterious and captivating. Electronic music supports this time Francesca’s whispering vocals for one of the best parts of the album. "Mu-Land" is a song that takes us back to the medieval passages of "Historiae" just like the following track "Oduarpa", more quiet than the previous one and with a tremendously intense ending. The epic poetry comes back with "Lost Atlantis", a beautiful song with dramatic ambiences and a great tension that precedes  "The land of sand of gold of ruin", another marine and experimental theme. It closes with "Departure" in the style of "The early days." The group refers to the work as a "pagan symphony."
