RhoDeo 1122 Aetix

Hello, Aetix coming up, but first a word of warning to all you mobile phone users, keep it short if you don't want to fry your hearing nerves or worse grow tumors inside your brain. Meanwhile the WHO (world health organisation) has put it's weight behind these claims. Young people (16<) are most at risk and behaviour problems have already emerged. Handsfree and sms is adviced , i suspect handsfree kits will come with every new smartphone from now on. Carcogenic is not a label these expensive toys would want. No news on the WiFi epidemic yet, our brains maybe able to withstand that onslaught but what about the effect on f.i. bacteria or bees (we definetly need those). Well you have been warned once more.

Today at Aetix the Pixies, a band that came out of nowhere in a time when the UK and Europe were in full post New Wave mode. The dance music as a new independent scene was rearing its head and out of the blue came this hard to classify (Cramps vs Wire) band that put out a mini album Come On Pilgrim, which was a smart move in more ways then one, the bands exteme dynamics came thru excellently and..the price was right. Their next 2 full albums came quickly after that, afterwards the rot set in as Kim Deal And Black Francis kinda hated eachothers guts, They made two more albums and that was it. Since they reunited (2004) for the money, and gave scores of concerts accompanied by a live albums. Hmm, clearly a case of distorted synergies. Well today the first 93 min of their output is up for grabs here.

The Pixies' history began when undergraduates Joey Santiago and Black Francis (born Charles Thompson IV) shared a room at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The two spent 1984 working in a warehouse, with Francis composing songs on his acoustic guitar and writing lyrics on the subway train. The pair formed a band in January 1985. Bassist Kim Deal joined Santiago and Francis two weeks later after responding to a classified advertisement Francis had placed, seeking a female bassist .
The band produced an 18 track demo at Fort Apache soon afterwards, known to fans as "The Purple Tape" because of the tape cover's purple background. The recording was funded by Francis' father at the cost of $1000 and took three days to record. The tape was released exclusively as a demo to interested parties, including Ivo Watts-Russell at 4AD and local promoter Ken Goes, who became the band's manager. Eight tracks from the Purple Tape were selected for the Come On Pilgrim EP, the band's first release. Come On Pilgrim showcased much of the Pixies' variety and set up the beginnings of many trends in their music. It includes two songs partly sung in Spanish ("Vamos" and "Isla de Encanta") and two songs that explicitly mention incest—"Nimrod's Son" and "The Holiday Song"

Pixies's first full-length album, Surfer Rosa. The album was recorded by Steve Albini , completed in a fortnight, and released in early 1988. Surfer Rosa gained the Pixies acclaim throughout the musical world; both Melody Maker and Sounds gave Surfer Rosa their "Album of the Year" award. After their critically acclaimed album, the band arrived in England to support Throwing Muses on the European "Sex and Death" tour—beginning at the Mean Fiddler in London. The tour also took them to the Netherlands, headlining the tour. Francis later recalled: "The first place I made it with the Pixies was in Holland."

Gil Norton was to produce their second full album, Doolittle (provisionally titled Whore),[10] which was recorded in the last six weeks of 1988 and seen as a departure from the raw sound of Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. Doolittle had a much cleaner sound. Like Surfer Rosa, Doolittle was acclaimed by fans and music critics alike. In 2003, the album was ranked number 226 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. After the Doolittle tour's final date in New York, the band was too exhausted and soon announced a hiatus.

During this time, Santiago travelled to the Grand Canyon to "find himself", and Lovering jetted off to Jamaica. Francis bought a yellow Cadillac and crossed America with his girlfriend . Kim Deal formed a new band, The Breeders, named after a band she had formed with her sister as a teenager, with Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses and bassist Josephine Wiggs of Perfect Disaster. Their debut album, Pod, was released later that year. After Doolittle, Francis began to limit Deal's contributions to the band and assert more control over the Pixies' output; the first three records had been partly written by Deal, but when Bossanova was released in 1990, all the original songs were by him.

The band continued to tour, and, break-up announcements notwithstanding, one more album was to follow. Trompe le Monde, released in 1991, still featured little creative input from Deal and was not as immediately well regarded as their first few albums. In the end, Trompe Le Monde expanded on the UFO and sci-fi themes (including a song on space travel, "Planet of Sound" and "Motorway to Roswell" about an alien vacation gone bad The album saw the band move in a more popular direction with songs as "Palace of the Brine" and "Trompe Le Monde". The songs "U-Mass" (sample (info)) and "Alec Eiffel" included the keyboardist Eric Drew Feldman—a move unthinkable in the band's Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa days. The album also featured a cover of "Head On" by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Trompe Le Monde was to be the Pixies' last studio album before their breakup.

Following the release of Trompe Le Monde, the band went on a sellout winter tour of the USA, culminating on a TV appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. They then embarked on an uncomfortable tour supporting fans U2 (on their Zoo TV tour) in 1992. However, tensions rose between band members, and, at the end of the year, the Pixies went on sabbatical and focused on separate projects. In early 1993, Francis announced in an interview to BBC Radio 5 that the band was finished. In late 2003 a press release from Black's publicist officially confirmed a reunion would occur in the spring of 2004. The folowing years they'd appear at festivals but a new album was not on the cards. In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of Doolittle, the Pixies launched a worldwide tour in October 2009, in which all the album's songs and B-sides would be played.

Come On Pilgrim is the debut mini-LP release by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in September 1987 by 4AD. In March 1987, the Pixies (Black Francis, guitar/lead vocals; Kim Deal, bass/vocals; Joey Santiago, guitar; David Lovering, drums), entered Boston's Fort Apache Studios with Fort Apache owner/record producer Gary Smith to record a demo tape. The resulting 17-song cassette, later dubbed "The Purple Tape" eventually found its way to Ivo Watts-Russell, president and co-founder of the influential British record label 4AD.

Watts-Russell hand-picked eight of The Purple Tape's 17 songs to make up a debut "mini album." Expressing regret that some previous 4AD debuts failed to live up the power of their demo versions, he decided to slightly re-mix eight of The Purple Tape's 17 songs for release, rather than have the band re-record the songs. The Pixies later re-recorded and included eight of the nine remaining Purple Tape tracks over the course of their albums and EP releases. The title of the album derives from Christian rock singer Larry Norman, whose catchphrase was "Come on pilgrim, you know He loves you",[2] which was used as a lyric in the song "Levitate Me". The original 1987 UK release entered the UK indie album chart on October 24, 1987, spending 29 weeks on the chart and peaking at number 5. Come On Pilgrim failed to secure distribution in the United States when it was first released. It was released in the United States in August 1988, when Rough Trade included it on their CD release of their first full-length album Surfer Rosa.

Surfer Rosa is the Pixies debut album, released in March 1988 on the British independent record label 4AD. The album's unusual and offbeat subject matter includes references to mutilation and voyeurism; this is augmented by experimental recording, low-fidelity production and a distinctive drum sound. Surfer Rosa contains many of the themes present in the Pixies' earlier output, including Spanish lyrics and references to Puerto Rico.

Surfer Rosa was released in the UK by 4AD on March 21, 1988, entering the UK Indie Chart the following week. It spent 60 weeks in the chart, peaking at number 2. Until August of that year it was only available in the U.S. as an import. Although the label held worldwide distribution rights to the Pixies, they did not have access to a distributor outside the UK. When 4AD signed a distribution deal with Rough Trade's U.S. branch, the album was released on vinyl and cassette as part of the Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim release. While Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim has remained in print on CD in the UK, subsequent U.S. releases have seen the two released on separate CDs. Despite this in 2005 was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Surfer Rosa's cover features a photograph of a topless "friend of a friend" of the band, posing as a flamenco dancer, pitched against a wall which displays a crucifix and a torn poster. Simon Larbalestier, who contributed pictures to all of the Pixies albums, decided to build the set because "we couldn't find the atmosphere we wanted naturally." According to Larbalestier, Francis came up with the idea for the cover as he wrote songs in his father's "topless Spanish bar"; Larbalestier added the crucifix and torn poster, and they "sort of loaded that with all the Catholicism.

Doolittle is the second Pixies studio album released in April 1989 on 4AD. The album's offbeat and dark subject material, featuring references to surrealism, Biblical violence, torture and death, contrasts with the clean production sound achieved by the newly hired producer Gil Norton. The album itself reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart, an unexpected success for the band. Doolittle was the Pixies' first international release, with Elektra Records acting as the album's distributor in the United States and PolyGram in Canada.

Doolittle has continued to sell consistently well in the years since its release, and in 1995 was certified gold inthe US. The album has been cited as inspirational by many alternative artists, while numerous music publications have ranked it as one of the most influential albums ever Rolling Stone placed the album at 226 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time"
